Hugh R. Hawkins, Clinton, dressed the Tuesday night gather-
ers

president of the Huron Liberal
Association (and vice-president of
the Western Ontario Liberal As-
sociation) expressed optimism for
his party at a meeting of the
Goclexich Liberal Association. last
week. He said, "I .cion't think
there's a chance that the present
opposition will form the next gov-
erment"
Hawkins told the meeting that
Elston Cardiff, Progressive.-Con-
servative MP for Huron "has done
nothing for us and can do nothing
for us."
Assuming that the present gov-
ernment is returned to power. and
A, Y. McLean wins in Huron, it
has been intimated by Walter
Harris, minister of •• finance, that
Mr. McLean would be given im-
mediate consideration for a cab-
inet post, said Mr. Hawkins.
A, Y, (Andy) McLean, Liberal
candidate for Huron riding in the
forthcoming federal election, ad-
ing and expressed optimism on the
basis of visits to various points in
the riding.
He defended the government's
iminigratidn policy. Noting some
charges that the country is being
flooded with immigrants, of an un-
desirable type, Mr, IVEcLean stated
that immigrants are carefully

Goderich, for highest marks in
vocal solo, 14 years .and under.
She scored 84 points. In the duet

points.
Top prize for unison chorus
from schools of 25 or more, went
to a school from the north of the
county; SS 1 and SS 8 Mullett
tied for second with, 84 points, and

Sixteen-year old John. Bloor,
Edmonton, Alberta, plead guilty in
Clinton Court on Tuesday morn-
ing to charges of careless driving,
He was fined $75 and costs and
his license 'was' suspended for
three months,
Bloor was the driver of a car
on Highway 4, south of Exeter
last weekend', which left its own
lane, and proceeded into the path
of an oncoming car, preparatory
to making a left hand turn. The
resulting accident sent seven peo-
ple to hospital. The young Than
had spent the weekend in the
County Gaol, at Goderich, when
bail of $500 was not raised.
Elmer Bell, Q.C, Exeter, was
defence counsel.
Charge Dismissed
A charge against Kenneth Far-
quhar was dismissed, when his de-
fense counsel, James Donnelly, no-
ted an error in recording the lic-
ense number of the car involved.
Upholds Constable
Magistrate D. E. Holmes fined
a Mr. Thiel $10 and costs for
careless driving, and upheld the
evidence given by Constable
Hobbs, OPP Goderich, in the case,
even though witnesses brought by
defense counsel J. Donnelly swore
to different evidence.
Two Guilty
William L, Ireland and W. R.
Scott each were fined $10 and
costs on charges resulting after,
an accident at the corner in Lon-
desboro. Ireland had been attemp-
ting a left hand turn. He turned
without giving a signal. Scott,
driving a tractor trailer, loaded
with grain bound for Goderich,
pulled out to pass the Ireland ve-
hicle, within 100 feet of the in-
tersection, where lines on the
highway indicate danger in pass-
ing, and had collided with it.
MISS M. DALES HAS JOINED
OFFICE STAFF AT RCAF
Miss Marion Dales, daughter of,
Mr, and Mrs. David Dales, Town-
send Street, who has been a stud-
ent at Goderich Business School,
has joined the office staff at
RCAF Station Clinton as typist
and receptionist.

The May meeting of the Wes-
ley-Willis Woman's Association
was held in the church parlor.
The Bible reading was by Mrs.
M, Steep; thoughts on the les-
son by Mrs. F, Reid, and prayer
by Mrs. F. Potter.
Mrs. F. Fingland and Mrs, M.
Steep were appointed delegates to
gq to Londesboro Presbyterial.
Mrs. G. Beattie gave a reading
"Adventures in a Garden."
A social hour was spent with
Mrs, Leslie Ball's group' in char-
ge.

To Visit With
Seaforth Lodge
The Relbekah Lodge met Mon-
day evening with Mrs. J. Broad-
foot in the chair. Quite a num-
ber of Clinton members had at-
tended the district meeting in
Brussels, Mrs, W, M. Necliger
brought back a fine report.
An invitation was received from
Seaforth Lodge to attend their
45th birthday on Monday, May
13. Those wishing td attend should
be at the lodge rooms at 7.30 p.m,
Cars will be provided.

FL Hawkins Optimistic
Poor Brakes
Young M. Dykstra (20), plead
guilty to careless driving, and was
fined $50. His license was sus-
pended for three months. Dyk-
stra had some onto Highway 8,
and struck a vehicle travelling on
the highway. He reported that he
had poor brakes, and was unable
to stop,
Lady Fined
Mrs. L. Jowett, Ba.yfield, was
charged with careless driving,
and plead guilty. She was fined
$10 and costs. Mrs.' Jawett had
been coming into Clinton on King
Street from Bayfield, and in
avoiding on-corning traffic had
crowded to the right to far: Her
car collided with one owned by
J. W. Nediger, parked on the right
side of the road.
