"Check Artist"
Makes Off With
$800 In Two Tons
"'Twee the month before Christ-
mas and all through the towns of
Goderich and •Clinton there stole
a check artist." The story is not
a humorous one, however.
It was on December 8, that a
man (or men) was able to pass
off bad checks in two stores• in
Clinton and two more in the
County town, making off with a
total of about $800
Anstett Jewellers, Clinton, re-
ceived one of the checks in the
amount of $185, for purchase
worth $49.95, ',and gave the bal-
ance in cash, Ball and_ Match
Hardware cashed one of the worth-
less pieces of paper, made out for
$145, for purchases valued at $2a.
Some of the checks, according
to investigating pollee, Chief K R.
Thompson, Clintort, and' Consta-
ble IL M. Parkinson, OPP, Gotler-
ich, were made out with the name
of Riverside Poutry Company at
the bottom--but they were not
the customary checks which that
firm uses.
"Regard your diploma as a
milestone,. rather than a goal,"
urged Rev, C. S. Inder, as he
spoke to the assembled students
at Clinton District Collegiate In-
stitute yesterday -evening. He
was the guest speaker at the op-
ening night of the school's annual
Commencement;
"Milestones," said Mr. Inder,
"tell you how far you have to go--
not how far you've come! He'
urged the students to consider
well -their decision to go on with
their education. He said that
Canada, of all nations, in the
world-today, has a desperate need
for educated and trained people.
Mr. Inder recalled that at "one'
time Canadians had been termed
"hewers of wood and drawers of
water," and he said that though
this was certainly incorrect, it
could become so, if the young peo-
ple forget the worth of getting a
higher educa.tion. The speaker
warned `thatthe time might come
when educated people from out-
side• Canada might come here and
accomplish the 'bigger tasks, if
our Canadian people are not
ready to take on these jobs them-
selves.

he concluded.
Principal E. A. Fines, who aCt-
edaag chairman - throughout the
evening, spoke directly to the
parents, and asked them to see
that their children attended school
regularly. He said that too. many
of them were staying away from
school, without a good enough
reason for it.
"Regular attendance is essent-
ial," said Mr. Fines, "and so is
riomework. Some homework
should be done every night. It is
good to learn to work, and to
work hard," he went on, "for at
all' jabs, you start at the bottom.
The only job I know of where you
start at the top is in digging post-
holes."
Recalling the work of last year's
graduates from Grade.13, he said
that 14 of them. Were now attend-
ing University; five were in Tea-
chers' College; two were at Ry-
erson Institute. They had, won
$1,310 in scholarship-money, and
$2,200 in bursaries.
