"Never in the history of agri-
culture,has there been .a greater
eeeclIor a strpng farm organiza-
tion, than at the PreSent time,"
commented Gordon Hill, (retiring
president), at the annual: meeting
of Varna Farm Union. Members,
friends, and guest from Goderieb
Township had gathered in the,
Township Hall, Varna.
"With farm costs spiralling, net
farm income has been cut in ,half
since 1951 and gross income 'of
Ontario farmere dropped 3 per-
cent in 1956," he said. Mr. Hill
also referred to his recent trip; to
Ottawa where Farm Union and
Feral -Implement Workers Cpun-
ell presented a brief to the gov-
ernment.
After a few games of euchre,.
Robert Taylor gave a report on
the play "Country Kids." He re-
ported the play had been well re-
ceived by three audiences, and
six additional invitations have
been received to present the play.
Plans were made for a special
meeting between Christmas and
New Year's. Mr. Cormack Will
tie asked to speak at Varna' at
that ,time, if it can be arranged.
Robert Taylor, C anty sub -dir-
ector conducted the election of of-
ficers which resulted as follows:

The regular 'meeting' of the renew bsr to garsard,

.director of Huron County far the
OFU, sat in;',..an the presentation
of Lab= •And. the Fenn Union's
first brief to parliament.
It was most encouraging to hear
the hi -lies of the brief and it
was graWyint, to now that at
last fanners are knocking on the
door at. Ottawa, asking help, and
are beginningto get an attentive
ear.
¥r. Hill impressed on the meet-
ing that membership mut
swelled into a majority, for, he
said, "A •government can't afford'
to listen to a minority :group hut
will .have to listen when that min-
ority becomes a majority."
Revived hope and enthusiasm
for better farming conditions for
the -ening year was gained from
Mr, Hill's inspiVng report.
Members were reminded of the
county meeting which wiil be held
'early in January. Further notice
