Tree Thieves-Get
Fine From Gait ,•. City Magistrate
In Magistrate's Court in Galt on
October 11, two immigrants were
convicted of stealing four spruce
trees from the Sudden Tract • of
the Waterloo County Forest. The
accused were both of London, and
came to Canada just over four
years ago.
'Ne.oifence 'Occurred on Sunday,
September 23, when they were ob-
served taking the trees from the
County Forest by the' caretaker_of
the Tract. The caretaker took the
licence numbers of the cars and
ment of Lands and Forests. W. E.
Steele, Reforestation Supervisor
for the Lake Huron District, trac-
ed the "accused to /London and
found the trees in their possession.
These men did not seem to real-
ize that it was a crirt inal. offence
to take trees found in government
or priVate plantations. It would
be sound advice for organizations'
concerned with the' instruction of
New Canadians to ,acquaint them
with the laws of this country, .
Magistrate Kirkpatrick stated
that the amount of the fine in no
way indicated the seriousness of
the Offence and that persons' hind-
ering conservation projects in 'this
manner would be severly dealt
with. A fine in the nature of $30
would more closely indicate the
seriousness of the offence and that
fines such as • would deter others
from attempting to steal trees
would be imposed in the future.
Mr, W. K. 'Fullerton, Zone For-
ester for the Department, stated,
that all raupicipal forests in the
area would be posted' with signs
stating -"Do Not Take Trees," ,as
a warning to all who Might con-
sider.stealing trees, 'He suggested
that owners of' private .plantations
do‘ the same to protect their plan-
tations as' thee Christmas season
draws closer. Mr, Fullerton hopes
that local citizensewill take pride
in their mehitipal fotests and pro,
teat therm from fire and .theft.
