-° •Another hunting season already
is under way In Ontario, an' activ-
ity which reaches it• peak in mid
'winter. This' season-as in scores
of previdiis seasons find's thousands
of people eager to, exercise their
public privilege of hunting.
Polblic hunting is a heritage as
truly Canadian as hockey, lacrosse,
or automatic vvashers. From thei
time the first settlers came to
Canada, hunting has been' and still
is important to many, many
people.
Settlers coming to these shores
brought with them, a then new
.concept of democracy. In Europe,
from whence most of them came,
ownership of Wild-life was vested
in the land, and hunting a pastime,
only for the titled-,gentry. Such a
plat r- did not-torresPdntrt-tr demo-
&racy, and settlers early wrote
publia ownership of wildlife into
their charters and., later Provincial
constitutions.
These provisions of Public hunt-
ing, howe'Ver, were not entirely
idealistic. Game comprised an im-
portant resource. Early settlers
pushing westward were ' almost
completely dependent upon wild
game for food until they could get
agricultural crops started. Trap-
pers and scouts who first investi-
gated;the wilderness lived entirely
"off the land." Those were the
days when ,a sharp shooting eye
was valued along with honour and
wealth.
As these frontiers elesed, hunt-
ing passed into the era of the•
market hunter. He stipplied, for a
price, cheap meat to a ' growing
market.
Now, ' this heritage has under-
gone still another change. Few
people now hunt for the meat in-
volved; .the- cost is too great ,They
