Warden Jack Fischer, 'reeve of Turnberry- Township was one
of the first speakers 'in the Salute to Hayfield radio broadpast
which originated in the village hall on Sunday morning. Here he
is (left) with Reid Rorsee, producer of the program
.(Helow) Many advance arrangements have to be made before
an "on the spot" broadcast such as the Salute can go on the air.
In this case a telephone line was strung into th elan by Walter
MacBeath, Brucefield, lineman with the Tuckersmith Municipal
Telephone System. Then connections are made with the Bell
Telephone ,lines right through to Toronto where the broadcast
finally goes on the air, Technician Gerald Stanley (seated) and

f.
'that was What the Canada Com-
pany charged him. For those who
haveret heard of Bayfield, let, me
say that it's a pleasant little sum-
mer resort village nbw with a pip-
ulation of about 400:' It's right on
Lake Huron and onethe Bluewater
highway between Grand' Bend and
Goderich. 'A generation before
most other places in the Huron
Tract came into being a century
ago Bayfield was a thriving lake
port with three elevators. In
1856 . . that's a hundred. years
ago : . . *100,000 bushels of wheat
were shipped from here. Often
there were better markets here
than in Goderich, the County Town
and businessmen came from as far
away as Chicago to locate in Bay-
field. HoweVer, as Mr. Francis
mentioned when the railway term-
inals were located at Goderieh,
Hayfield's fortune' declined. Nev-
ertheless . . and I emote from the
county atlas of 1879 . , Bayfield
possesses attribptes which none
can. deny it -. those of a pleas-
ant, quiet, little country town en-
joying all the benefits which may
bp reaped from a Hell and fertile
country surrounding it and a good
class of citizens inhabiting it. As
such it cannot but continue to
flourish. Thos'e words written
about 80 years ago are still true,
And here's a man who knows
it . . , he's been here longer than
89' years, that well-known apple
grower, Mr. Stirling. How old are
you Mr, Stirling?
Stirling: I'm 82 years young
and thanks to the epples I don't
fee] a day Over 60.
