A pretty wedding was solemniz-
ed in St. Joseph's Roman Catholic
Church here last Saturday morn-
ing, September 1, when Grace
Gertrude Jessie Handy, daughter
of Mr. arid Mrs. James W. Handy,
RIR, 4, Clinton, was united in mar-
riage with. LAC Gerald G. Whit-
taker, RCAF Station. Clinton, son
of the .late Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin
Whittaker, Oak Bay, Quebec.
The Rev. J. W, p, • Graham con-
ducted the service.
The bride, given in marriage by
her brother, James Robert Handy,
wore a grey flecked cotton tweed
suit with white accessories' and a
corsage of red roses,
As bridesmaid, Miss Vivian Ed-
wards, Clinton, wore a pink linen
suit with white accessories and a
corsage of white carnations.
Groomsman was Robert Graham,
Clinton.
Following a reception at the
home of Mr. and Mrs.._ Howard
Fletcher, the yOung couple -left on
their wedding trip. Upon their
return they plan to live at Clinton.

Are Honoured
Clinton- grandmothers were hon-
oured at a meeting of the Clinton
Women's -Institute held .on Thurs-
day, August 23 at the home of
Mrs. _Qbarles Elliott, Despite the

Mrs, Fred Tyndall and Mrs.
Howard Snell were in charge of
the meeting. The program con-
sisted of a couple of hunaorOu$
readings by Mrs. Snell and riddles
and contests.
R, Webster, who was the
oldest grandmother present,. was
honoured -by a lovely corsage and
suitable gift, The youngest grand,
mother was. M. Earl B10.* and
the prize-,winner for having the
most grandchildren was Mrs, Wes'
Vandenberg.

Thomas Baxter McArter, was held

Blytli on August. 22, conduc-
ted by the Rev. Bren deVries,
rector of Trinity Anglican, Church.
Interment followed in Blyth Union
Cemetery.,
Following the family service 'at
the, graveside, the Last Rites of
the Masonic Order were conduc-
ted by the officers ',and members.

The late Mr. Mch..x.ter,. who was
in his 80th year uffs Stricken sud-
denly at his"hoine on Friday, -and
passed away on Sunday, August 19.
Born ion the 8th concession 'of
Morris Township, 'north-half lot
20, on September 7, 1876, he was
,a son of the late William McArter
iihd Janet McKersey.- With the
exception of some "20 years spent
in Western Canada, he had spent
his entire life as a resident of
Blyth.
He was an activee sportsman in
his earlier years and had played
football and baseball for teams in.
Blyth, Wingha.m, Clinton and Sea-
forth. ' Iri later years he was an
ardent follower of local baseball
teams. '
For many years he was a photo-
grapher here, and hi Brussels, To-
ronto, Winnipeg, Man., 'Melford,
Sask., Tisdale, Sask., and Hartney,
Manitoba. He was also an out-
standing penman, and gave his
services freely in this respect, one
such act standing •as a memorial
to his hand in the form of an hon-
qur roll of service members in
Blythc Masonic -Lodge. For many
years, and up until recently, he
was an excellent patnter and ,ex-
terior, decorator' around the com-
munity.
Prominent in, local fraternal
societies, he was a member of
Blybh AF and AM No. 303, and

spring when. • he was, presented'

Besides his sorrowing widow, he
is survived by a brother, .Hugh.
Alex McArter, Hartney, Man., who
is,. the last survivor of a family of
eight, also a number of nephews
and nieces. -
The 'late Mr: McArter -was a
highly respected citizen of Blyth
community, and the service was
largely attended by friends and
relatives,

Miss Rachel Amelia, Reed, 71 years
old,' who passed away in Clinton
on Wedriesday;, August 22.

Pentecostal church, officiated and
interment was in Baird's Ceine--
tery; Stanley Township. Pall-bear-
ers were Watson Webster, Aldon
Mustard, Dean Aldwinckle, Gear-
ge. Wilson, Harry Woolley, Harvey

- 'Born in .Goderich Township on
January 25, 1885, Miss Reed mov-
ed with her family to Stanley
Township some years later. Sur-
viving is one brother, William
Reed, Varna, and one sister, Mrs.
Rhoda:I/filler, Clinton.

Edwin Harney, Goderich, who
died August 22, in Clinton, Public
Hospital, spent his early ,life
McKillop Township.
Aft..r moving to Goderich he
was fireman at the Purity Flour
Mills for 39, years. He was' a mem-
ber of North Street United Chur-
ch, and of Goderich COF lodge.
Surviving besides 'his wife, .-the
former Mary Church, are three
daughters, 'Mrs. Julia Lowe, De-
troit; Mrs.' Gordon Murray, Port
Arthur; MrS. James' MacLaren,
Clinton; one niece, Mrs. Henry
Rasmussen, Calgary; and one sis-
ter, Mrs. Ernest, Kneeshaw, Mea-
ford._ ' '
Service at 'the Lodge funeral
home, Goderich, on Friday after.-
noon, .by. the Rev. Hugh C. Wil-
son, Clinton, Interment was in
Colborne Cemetery.

The death occurred suddenly
following a heart seizure,. on Thurs-
day evening, August 30, of John
Grant Rankin, Goshen, Indiana.
Born in Detroit on October 24,
194., he was a. son of the late
Mr: and Mrl. J. Gordon Rankin.
As a small child he went to live
with his aunts, the MiSses Rankin.,
With 'the exception of the years
when he served with the Merchant
Marine, in the First Great War,
he had spent vacations at Bayfiekl
each summer' since 'lie was five
years of age.
He had a great love for Bayfield
and enjoyed, nature Audy. Of late
years he had taken an active in-
terest in the Pioneer Park Assoc-
iation, and also the prevention of
erosion.
Mr. Ranloin had been an, elect-
rical engineer with the Northern
Indiana Public Utilities for over 20
years. In 1930 he was Married to
Miss• Martha Olsen, Detroit, who
with four children, John, Karen,
Robert and Tom survives. Also
surviving are his .aunt, Miss Cath-
erine P. Rankin, Bayfield and
Penney -Farms, Florida, and three
half brothers, Sgt. Charles, USA
Army; Major Robert, Prof. of
Military Tactics, University of
Pennyslvania: William Rankin, De-
troit.
The funeral service. Was held at
Goshen', Indiana on Sunday, and
intefinent made in a cemetery
there,

Sunday, September 9, in the, Unit-
ed Church as anniversary services
are being held in the Goshen
Church, where the Rey. S. Dav-
ison, Brucefield will be the Speak-
er, at 11 .a.m, and 7.30 p.m.
Mr. and Mrs. • David Pitt and
family, who have been visiting at
the United Church Parsonage,
Varna, went to Toronto on Mon-
day. Mr. Pitt is taking graduate
studies at Toronto University for
his Ph.D., in English,
John Pitt is at present vacat-
ioning With his parents at Varna,
and returns On Saturday by air
to Newfoundland Where he is em-
ployed by the Imperial Oil Co.
(operatiOns department).
The schools re-opened on Tues-
day following the. holidays. Im-
'prover/rents have been made dur-
ing the summer to sonic of the
schools, adding to the etanfort of
the pupils and increasing the gen-
:erai efficiency of the schools, At
the Varna village" school where
Mrs. C. Talbot it teacher, nine new
pupils have been enrolled in Grade
One.
! Farmers have been, very birsy
harvesting grain drops during the
past few days. The dry weather
has been very welcome after one
of the most discouraging seasons
for many years
