women of culture and education

As the' .cOuntry opened up, mare
Attention WAS paid to .schools, and
edUcation is stressed in -Canada
today as never before. .So we saw
a lovely new, school replace the
old. ' •
Lest we forget the influence of
the teachers on the pupils; lest
we forget that not only pupils but
each one of us influences fo rgood
or 'bad on those with whom we
come in contact.
But before we draw memories
of the .,old school/ from the past,
we would like to pen a few words
about those who had been form,
er pupils and teachers " in the
.school who were present that day.
First, we present to readers who .
de net know them, our two very
excellent teachers. ,of today, (They
have been re-engaged for anoth-
er year), 'llo them went a great
deal of credit for the success of
the official opening, - And also the
pride 'of the pupils in their new .
school,. so that in the months it
has been occupied, not a scratch
shows.

Was born in Bayfield, the elder
daughter of Mrs,. jpvvett and the
late William. R. JoWett. .0 She attended Bayfield Publie

Ames Ferguson taught the Jun-
ior and lower room,
After greduting from Clinton
Collegiate Institute, Ethel. Jowett.
attended' London- Normal School,
She obtained her First Class .Cen,
tifice;te..
Her first School Was SS No,, 1,
Mara (near Brechin) where she
taught from 1925-27.
Then she. went,to New Dundee
Continuation School, where Miss
Izetta Merner (formerly, of Bay-
field) was principal; for 1927-29.
- Ethel'. wasmarried to LeRoy
Poth and after spending the win-
ter in Florida, they resided in To-
ronto, Here mrs, Poth tutored.

The Poths established a home
in .Caledonia. in 1931, and here
Miss, Poth .dict. supply work. Then
dining the war years, 1940-45, she
taught school again. "The trus,

Poth sold their home in Caledonia
and with their son Ronald, came
to 13ayileld to take over the Jew-
ett cottages.' •
That Thanksgiving they spent in
New Dundee with Mr, Poth's par-.
eras. The school trustees ,iiiiplor-
ed her to fill a vacancy _created
by the sudden departure of a
teacher, So she taught for the
remainder of the year, and while
spending the winters 1946-48 in
Kitchener, she. did occasional
teaching. Last autumn Mrs. Poth
commenced teaching in the old
school here; where she bad. stud-
ied, and made the transition to
the modern building.
• Mrs, William E. Parker, assis-
tant, was born in Logan Town-
ship, Perth County.
Lamina Herbert, daughter of the
late Mr .and Mrs, Wiliam Herbert
got, her education in SS No, 3,
Wallace, Listowel Public School,
Mitchell Public and High Schools
and Stratford Normal School.. She
obtained her second class certifi-
cate (recently attended summer
schools and was .granted' her First.
Class • Certificate).
Her first school Was SS 11, Pro-
ton Township, 1926-27 and she also
taught in SS No. 4, W. Stanley,
1927-32, SS No. 3 Stanley 1932-33.
Miss Herbert was married to
William E. Parker in July of that
year and they made their home.
in Hayfield. They have two sons,
William • . Charles and Robert
Thomas.
In 1941 -the Trusteee Board
consisting of George Castle, Alf
Westlake and' Lloyd Makins,
(Frances' ' Fowlie, secretary-treas-
urere for 14 years, was in office
at that time), pressed Mrs. Par-
ker to teach. She was also in-

The writer recalls calling •out
to -her as she passed one-day that
August: "I hear that you are go,
ing to be one of our teachers."
"Indeed I'm not!" she ejaculated,
"I have a 'home and two boys to
look after and thats enough to do."
But when the Board hadn't been
able to secure teachers' for either
rooms, they kept after her, and
also used persuasion on her hus-
band to have her fill in as a war
emergency, They offered her the
upper room but she finally gave
her consent to teach 'the junior
classes the last week in August.

Church took the senior room).
Mrs. Parker has been teaching
here ever since and no one apprec-
iates the.conveniences, of the new
school more than she does,

The June meeting, of the WA
and eWMS-was held- At the home
of 'Mat William Dewitt with a
goad attendance. . Roll call was
answered by 15 ladies' and ten
visitors, The . time was set at
8.15 for the evening meetings to
commence. MT'S.. Dale turned the
Meeting over to the WMS,
Mrs. Rev. J. T. White offered
prayer, The minutes, of the last
meeting were -read* and adopted.
The open meeting which takes
place on June. the 20th was dis-
cussed. Mrs. Mellwain and Mrs.
Frank Riley .were appointed to do
the decorating.
Mrs. White read - the Scripture
lesson and Mrs:. McIlwain gave a
reading. Mrs. - Dave' Millson in-
vited 'the ladies .to, her home for
the July meeting. Mrs. Millson
gave a reading followed by the
stewardship paper which was giv-
en by Mrs. Brown. Mrs. Ross c-

ducted contests which were enjoy-
ed by all, The meeting dosed
with the benediction and Mrs.
Glen and her group served a sub, stantial lunch.
