An enthusiastic gathering of
gardeners. from the Horticultural
oeieties o f Clinton, Auburn,
Brussels and Goderich, met in
MacKay Hall, Goderich on .Wed-
nesday evening; May 18,E with
John F. Clark, secretary of .the
Ontario. Horticultural Association,
as guest speaker.
Mrs. Jessup, Goderich, acted as
chairman and Misses Donna Gard-
ner and Mary Blackstone, winners
in the Music Festival, favoured
with an instrumental duet.
Clifford H. Epps, Clinton., Reg-
ional Director for District 8, Hort.
iculteral Branch Department of
Education, introduced-the popular
and widley known guest speaker.
"The gardening urge is innate
in man" said Mr. Clark, "as the
Lord God planted a tree in the
midst of the garden and impian-
ted the first man in Eden, 'in the
best possible environment for
him." "One should start garden-
ing young and continue until the
sere and yellow leaf. Gardening
is the ornamental side of agricul-
ture. Interest children early in
gardening as it makes for good
citizenship. The head of a penal
institute told me, he never once
got a gardener among the inmat-
es.
"Our Horticultural Society has
left a very definite mark on our
whole province, so rich in mater-
ial beauty of farms and forests.
It is the responsibility of each one
to make his place better than he
found it.
"I commend most highly our
Horticultural Societies which are
literally service clubs in their
"cleanup, paint up and plant up
themes"
Mr.-Clark supplemented and il-
lustrated his inspiring address
with beautiful slides from a 4,000
mile trip, which included shots
taken in Florida, Weshington,D.C,
etc.
"We are more fortunate than
those countries' whose homes and
public places were devestated by
war. In England, alone, a million
homes were wrecked.
"It is not a home until it is
planted." Mr. Clark showed many
before and after picturet and slid-
es of gorgeous flower beds, also
prize winning slides in the flow-
er contest.
"God smiled and there were
flowers, so we broaden the divine
smile across the landscape when
we plant flowers. It is significant
indeed that the Man of Galilee
went out into a garden to pray on
his last night."
"When laying out a garden
avoid a series of straight rows.
Nature abhors; straight lines. Our
heads and the Clouds and the sun
and moon 'and trees have curved
lines. Get curved lines and brok-
en height in a border and a ripple
of bloom throughout the season.
In closing Mr. Clark said "The
mightiest atom is the seed and So
I urge you to "Say it With flow-
ers' and build up the beauty of
your hornet and thus of the town."
Mr. Epps moved a vote of
