A TRUE DEAR STORY.
All the novelties of a bear:hunt
were vividly realized last
evening on the farm of Win. Linklater,
13th concession of East WaWanosh,
and caused quite an excitement while
it lasted. Laban Walters was the
first to sight his bearship as he was
going across to Liuklater's about half
'past seven in the evening. The meet-
ing was sudden and unexpected, as
Bruin was making his way quite
'leisurely from Mr. Linklater's bush to
that of Mr, Anderson, and crossed the
ath just a few rods in front of young
Walters. The bear, storped when he
• saw Walters, who, thinking it not advis-
-ablate venture on, turned ancl jumped
!overthe nearest fence. Bruin then con-
linued his journey -southward. Wal-
ters started for Linhlater's to get a
.gun and the Linklater boys, too. He
could hardly make them believe he
liad seen such an anunal. They had
no caps for the gun, so that weapon
was useless. They thought they
would like to got a look at him, any.
way, and so started in the direction
which his bearship had taken. On
• coining to the top of a hill they found
the bear had caught a sheep from Mr.
Linklater's flock and wps busy at his
supper. On seeing them, he let go
the sheep and sped to the bush. The
boys by this time, procured caps for
the gun; ancl, adding two -more to their
number, and a clog, started after con.
• siderable delay in pursuit of -Bruin,
one carrying a good stout stick, an -
'tither a monkey -wrench and two others
the gun. But the bear had rather
much of a start of them. They fol-
lowed him about a mile and a half,
the clog being quite closet° him some.
times. Darkness came on and stopped
further pursuit that night. So they
turned their footsteps homeward, feel-
ing satisfied with having chased --a
genuine- grizzly.

—Your Salem correspondent did not
mention the names of all the great men
to be found in tnis vieinity. Ho left
out Frederick the Great, Moody, De
Witt, Ralph Waldo, and —we were
going to say a Florence Nightingle but
but I guess we won't. As it is unusual
to find a place noted for great men.
which is not visa famed for beautful
women we may hope your Salem
correspondent will be liberal -minded
enough to give us a pen sketch of the
latter in a future number of your iseue.
