T$AMOAD PM XIZVETI Rural 'Phones Are "500" Sets, More Sensitive To Sound A new type of telephone design- ed to meet special transmission requirements will be used to pro- vide to telephone users on rural multi-party lines the same quality of service as that provided in Clinton, Officially they are known as "500" sets, while a good many of those used in Clinton are the . "continental", "BOO" type, or wall sets, W, W. Haysom, Bell Telephone manager for this area, said that the telephone instruments installed in rural premises were specially engineered to serve users remote from the exchange through which they are served, ,customers of the Me10/10.1) Nan001341 Telephone system And, Tueltersmith Municipal Telephone $yston are among those who will be using the new-type sets. Different in, appearance from the instruments employed in ton, the new Sets' are modified to Offset any loss of transmission quality which might occur because. of the distances over which. the conversation must travel to and from the exchange, Mr. -Kays= •said that the new sets feature improved hearing and talking circuits which permit greater strength and o.arity than would be possible if the older type sets were used in rural areas. The rural set has the numbers and letters printed in white on a black background and located out= side the finger wheel, The receiver- transmitter unit has a flatter grip than that on sets used in Clinton. Mrs. John lVfiddietert spent a few days in Toronto last week as the guest of her son-in-law' and (laugh- ter; Mr. and Mrs. John McKenzie, WA Meeting The Woman's Association of St, James' Church Middleton, held a special meeting at the home of Mrs. Milton Steepe, on Tuesday evening, April with about 50 persons present. The meeting was opened by singing the hymn, "The Strife is of r, the battle Won,_." followed by prayer by the president, then th0 members' prayer and the Lord's prayer in unison. Mrs, Arnold Milled gave the Scripture reading, St, Matthew' 28; 5-20. The president, Mrs. Fred Middle- ton warmly welcomed the mem- •bers and special guests and gave a resume of the W.A. work done in this parish. . Mrs. Gordon Rathwell read the minutes and Mrs. Donald Middle- ton gave, the treasurer's report. Mrs. Dutot gave the Dorcas re- porTt stating the outfit is complete. This will be on display at the May meeting to be held .at. the home of Mrs. Alfred lindie, The speaker for the evening, Mrs, Neville Forbes, was introduc- ed by Mrs, Stewart Middleton. Mrs, Forbes' subject' was a book review based on "Gone with the Windsors" by Iles Brodie, This -talk was most interesting and informative, spiced with many incidents in the life Of this much diScussed couple, who shuttle from New York to Paris and back again. The women present were .entranc-' edi with interest in the Duchess' shopping orgies,' and social life. This book does not present the Windsor's in a happy light, as the author considers they placed the monarchy in great jeopordy with Edward's decision to abdicate and that their subsequent life-does not justify his decision, Mrs. _Forbes' talk was well re- ceived, being very .witty and pack- ed with new information. Mrs, Rowden moved an apprecia- tive vote of thanks to Mrs. Forbes. Mrs, Gordon Rathwell gave a humorous reading from Haydn Pearson's. book, "That. Darned, Minister's Son." Miss Barbara Middleton and Mrs. Donald Middleton conducted some singing action games which helped all to relax. The guest soloist of • the even- ing, Miss Claire Taylor, Blyth, favoured with several selections including "Bless this House," "Ser- enade of the Bells," "Oh, Happy, Happy Wedding Day." She was I ably accompanied on the piano by Miss Mavis Steeps. Mrs. Donald IV/iddleton moved a sincere vote of thanks to the mus- icians and to Mr. and Mrs. Milton Steepe for their kind hospitality. The rector, the l'te.v. Warren Outerbridge voiced his appreciat- ion and closed the meeting with prayer. Bounteous lunch and soc- ial hour ended a most enjoyable meeting. 0 Exchanges Design Fits Changes In Telephone Tides In an exchange area one can see the tide of telephone calling rise and fall with the daily life of the community. In the average exchange, calls reach their peak in 'mid-morning, as the business of the day gathers speed. There's a lull during the lunch hour and then the number of calls rises again towards the middle of the afternoon, when business picks up its tasks again and the housewife remembers a dozen things to be done before supper time. Social activities are usually ar- ranged in early evenings, so the tide runs high again, between seven and eight o'clock. As the evening wears on, fewer and fewer callS• are made; and by one o'clock in the morning little more than the essential services of the com- munity are using the telephone. Unusual rushes in telephone traffic can be caused by a score of reasons — bargain sales, elec- tions, storms, sport events. Some traffic rushes Can be anticipated and prepared for — long holiday weekends such as Labour Day and, of course the Christmas and New Year season always bring heavy local and long distance traffic. Telephone exchanges, are so de- signed that the heavy Volume of calls during busy hours can be handled efficiently, Entomologists figure there are 6,000 pests or potential pests among the 700,000 varieties Of in- setts identified to date in Canada, Godesich Township e .-+s+••-+r • (Minton Arta Campaign tglarlialalt ELiving wimstEn, VADNA Local Chairmen: Milieu Township--Mrs. :Robert FairterVice, Rit 1, Londesboro Adastral Park ,Mrs, C.
