known Hensall pioneer, will cele-
brate her 98th birthday on Sun-
day, April 3, and will spend the
day quietly at her home with her
daughter Jennie, who tekes care
of her,
Mrs. Buchanan, in spite of her
advanced years, enjoys comparat-
ively good. health and takes an
interest in current events. Until
recent years she enjoyed knitting,
crocheting and gardening, and will
be glad when' the warm weather
comes so she can sit on het veran-
dah to enjoy the sunshine,
A native of the second conces-
sion of Hay Township, Mrs. Buch-
anan attributes her long life to
plenty of hard work and taking
each day in its stride. A resident
of Hensall for the Rest 27 years,
she came here after residing with
her husband on a farm in Tucker-
smith. . •
She likes to reminisce over the
early days. They cut the trees
put them in piles' and burned them
to clear -the land to grow crops.
They first had a span of oxen,
then years later they got a span
of light horses and a lumber wagon
which was their only means -of
transportation,
She attended church at Roger-
villa (between Hensall and Exe-
ter) with her parents who came
to Canada from Ireland, when the
late Rev. John. Logie was the min-
ister. She has two sons, one dau-
ghter, 11 grandchildren and 16
great grandchildren.
