wheats, and it is impossible to sell either in the
London or the country markets, except at a deolin
of Od to 15. The fact that mush of tho wheat offer-
ingis in bad condition helps to dedress islues.

liONTitSAL, Feb. 1.—No improvement in the con-
,dition of trade, and as the snpply of cattle exceeds
the demand low figures have to bo accepced. Cattle
el prime quality hold their own, but inferior grades
aro very low in price. Good to choice export cattle
are at 4 to 41e c, medium do., 3;- to 31 o ; a good
'butchers' 3 to 4 c. Good sheep sold freely at 31k to
4 c. per lb. live weight.

prospects of lower prices for balance of week; West-
ern steers, $3.40 to £3.76 ; common 33.25. Sneep
and lambs—market weak on poor Easteru advices;

Howiek Council Meeting.
'The council of Howick met on the
16th ult. They subscribed to the oath
of office as follows :— ', Keine, reeve ;
S. Johnston, 1st deputy -reeve ; W.
Jacques, 2nd deputy ; Alex. Graham
and Alex. Littlejohn, councillors.
Minutes of last meeting were approved.
It was agreed that the hall be given
free for the county meeting of the
Orange Lodge. Wm. Dane was chosen
clerk, as $300, exclusive of postage,
stationery and fees of member of Board
of 'Health ; George Strong, treasurer,
at a salary of $90; Geo. Padfield, as.
sensor, at $130. The salary of the
collector for the west division to be
$701 for the east division $60; the
auditors fees $8 each ; the appoint-
ment of collectors to be loft until fall.

Manhood were appointed members of
the Board of Health along frith the'
reeve and clerk. Wm. H. Clegg was
appointed caretaker of the hall, at a
salary of $70. The council adjourned
to meet in Pordwich on the 8rd Wed-
nesday in February,
