Lions Club Hears
Local Man Speak
"Why should we go out of town
for our dinner meeting speake e,
was the remark made by Clinton
Lions Club President R, M. Alois
after Tuesday evening's meeting
in St. Paul's Parish Hall with 32
Lions in attendance. Harry Ball,
a Clinton merchant was the speak-
er for the evening .and gave an
excellent address on his work with
the gold mines in Northern On-
tario, and in Chili, where he work-
ed as .a geologist for nine years,
M. Ball gave some aspects of
the mining industry in Canada,
stating that
Canada is first in
he.
production of nickel (85 per cent
of the world's output), first in pro-
duction of asbestos and second in
gold production. Mr. Ball's work
in Northern Ontario was investi-
gating claims discovered by free-
lance prospectors, He explained
the procedure a private prospector
has to go through in making claim
on a property. He said the air-
plane has advanced prospecting
consideably. Now they have instru-
ments in the aircraft to detect the
mineral content in the earth be-
low. Practically all of Northern
Ontario has now been prospected
or exploited in some way. Mr.
Ball passed around several pieces
of ore containing mineral content
of different kinds.
Introduced by his business part-
ner Royce Macaulay, Mr. Ball was
thanked by H. C, Lawson,
Lion Lorne Brown reported on
the hockey situation in Clinton,
mentioning the Colts team; the
sale of reserved seats for all Colts
home games, and the sale of the
service clubs of Clinton "hockey
promotion" draw which will take
place at the arena Saturday night.
President Aldis reported on the
Christmas Seals campaign. He also
mentioned that through the co-
operation of the CDCI principal
and the English teacher there, that
the Lions would enter at least one
contestant in the Lions clubs pub-
lic speaking contest. Mrs. J. E.
Robinson, English specialist at the
collegiate, is a former winner from
Clinton .in this contest.
Lion Secretary George Knights
and Lion Skip Winter reported on
the recent father and son banquet,
which was quite a successful af-
fair. Mr. Knights remarked that
all the leaders in the Lions -spon-
sored scout, cub and girl guide
troops were service personnel from
RCAF Station Clinton. He also
remarked on the urgent need for
more spacious quarters for boy
scout activities.
At the next meeting on Decem-
ber 8, Leon T. Black, general man-
ager of the Sheaffer Pen Co. of
Canada Limited, Goderich, will be
the speaker.
