Mr. and Mrs. Watson Webster,
Varna, left Tuesday afternoon by
motor for a trip through Western
Canada, and if all goes well, Van-
couver,
Varna Womens' Missionary
Society held its August meeting in
the church with nine members
present, The front road women's
group was in charge with Mrs. L.
McConnell opening the meeting
with the theme "Untrodden Ways"
and a poem of meditation by Hor-
ace Shipp. A hymn was sung, and
the responsive reading read. Pray-
er was offered by Mrs. L. McCon-
nell. Mrs, G. Reid took charge of
the business, The minutes of the
previous meeting were read and
adopted, seconded by Miss Rachel
Johnston. The text word for Sep-
tember will be "Harvest", There
were 28 calls to shut-ins. Mrs. W.
Webster gave the treasurer's re-,
port.
The devotional part of the meet-
ing was resumed with Mrs. E, Mc-
Clinchey giving a reading "Jesus
Shall Reign". Mi•s, P. Johnston
read a poem entitled "Would You
)3e Happy".
"Coronation Echoes from In-
dia" was read by Miss Rachel
Johnston. Mrs. L. McConnell gave
a reading on an "Open Air Meet-
ing in Bolivia."
The meeting closed with hymn
378 and prayer by Mrs. L. Mc-
Connell. For the lunch, the Parr
Line ladies brought home-made
candy which was very delicious.

a big smile these days. He is a
Grandpa. On Sunday, August 16,
1953, born to Mr. and Mrs, Hulley
Seaforth, a son. Congratulations,
Mr, and Mrs. 3, H. Riley spent
a weeks holidays at Niagara Falls
and other points.
Friends of Constance sympathize
with Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Dodds in
their bereavement.
Mr. and Mrs. F. C. Riley of
Kitchener spent Sunday at the
home of his parents.
A few children in the vacinity

Friends and neighbors gathered
in the church schoolroom on Mon-
day evening to honour Miss Ruth
Scott at a shower prior to her
marriage on Saturday.
Fallowing a program of contests
and musical numbers in which
Mrs. Henderson sang a solo and
Mrs. J. R .Murdock played a piano
instrumental, Ruth was asked to
sit in a decorated chair, Mrs,
Kenneth Parke read an address
and the guest of honour was given
numbers which led her to many
beautiful gifts, She was assisted
in opening the gifts by her mother,
Mrs. Ross Scott and the groom's
mother, Mrs. L. Rushcall, Fernee,
British Columbia.
Mrs, Al Hill and Mrs. Mel Gra-
ham also assisted. Ruth thanked
all for the beautiful gifts, A social
half hour followed.

Gwen and Bobby McBride are
taking a few holidays with their
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. 'Orval
Rapson, Londesboro.
"Being a Good Neighbour" was
the theme of the Goshen United
Church Mission Band on Sunday,
"When He Cometh" was sung ac-
companied by Merle Armstrong at
the piano. Scriptures were read by
Elaine McClinchey, Merle Arm-
strong, Barbara Hayter and a
visitor, Doris Hayter, Centralia.
The minutes were read and roll
call answered by 15 members and
five visitors. Four girls and four
boys took part in a dialogue. Those
taking part were Donald Elliott,
Allan Hayter, Raye Armstrong
and a visitor, Clayton Connell,
Seaforth; Donna Hayter, Gail Mc-
Bride, Marlene McClinchey and
Gwendolyn McBride.
A, McAllister, London, had
charge of the service last Sunday
morning at Goshen United Church,
Rev. T. J. Pitt is taking his holi-
days but will be in charge of the
service again next Sunday.

Tornado Victims
Receive Help From
Disaster Relief
Representatives of the Huron
Tornado Committee were assured
of consideration for victims of the
tornado which struck Huron Coun-
ty on May 25, from the Canadian
Disaster Relief Fund.
Warden Alvin Kerslake, Hen -
sail, and County Clerk A. ,H. Ers-
kine, Goderich, were in Toronto
last Thursday where they inter-
viewed the secretary of James S.
Duncan, president of Massey -
Harris and chairman of the fund.
They reported that they had an
encouraging discussion and they
felt satisfied that assistance would
be forthcoming.
The meeting was arranged by
Andrew Y. McLean, MP, Huron -
Perth, in the last Parliament.
