Bayfelcl's Oldest Couple
Voted on 1VMQnday
Mr, and Mrs. George King,
whose combined age is 180 years,
are rather proud of themselves
that they were able to get out
to vote on Monday, - and very
much pleased that they didn't
lose their votes, either. We
wonder if any other couple in
Huron County, or Western Ont-
ario for that matter, can match
this record?

Jury Finds No -
Negligence in
OR Man's J; each
(Continued from Page One)
The gas car, or jigger, with the
five workmen aboard was ap-
proaching the sideroad a mile and
a quarter south of Brucefield,
travelling at approximately 15
miles per hour on a routine check
of rail and general road condi-
tions. T. Peeves, whose particular
job it was to look ahead for traffic
approaching, saw the truck coming
down the sideroad, and called a
warning to stop, later following up
with the words, "Get off", when
he saw that the vehicles were not
going to stop in time, McLeod,.
Steep and Hildebrand all stepped
off the gas car as it continued to
roll. Foreman Maxwell at the
controls had applied the brakes
immediately after the first warn-
ing,
The hopper trailer truck, ap-
proaching the intersection at ap-
proximately 15 miles per hour, and
bearing a load of ten yards of
gravel meant for the road just
west of the crossing was driven
by Donald Strong, Clinton. The
driver saw the gas car approach c
ing and applied his brakes to stop
the truck, swerving to the right
wi en it became evident that the
truck would not stop in time.
Failure to see the other vehicles
earlier, was attributed by both
parties, to be owing to the tall
stand of corn in the field adjacent
to the crossing.
Somehow, Mr. Hildebrand fell in
the path of the truck, and the
rear dual wheels passed over the
upper part of his body causing in-
stantaneous death, as reported by
the coroner.
The truck struck the gas car
and carried it along, with Maxwell
and Deeves still on it, approximat-
ely seven feet off the track, coin-
ing to a stop with the contacting
front wheels of both vehicles lock-
ed together.
Mr. Hildebrand was the son of
the late Mr. and Mrs. William
Hildebrand. He is survived by his
wife, the former Mary Huiser,
Hensall, and two children, Marlin,
12, and Anne, a Bell Telephone
operator at London.
The body rested at the Bonthron
funeral home, Hensall, until Wed-
nesday morning, when requiem
high 'mass was sung by Father M,
D. Monaghan, in St. Boniface
Church, Zurich. Interment was
made in the church cemetery.

E., Cardiff Wins
Huron Riding;
1,212 Majority
(Continued from Page One)
the marching music for the tradi,
tional victory parade, which car,
ried Mr. Cardiff and his party'
through the riding in the small,
hours of the morning.
Beginning at Wingham, where al
chartered Wingham High School
bus took the pipe band aboard for
the tour of the riding, the motor-,
cade that formed behind Mr. Car-
diff's car visited Blyth and Brus-
sels, and then went to the county'
seat at Goderich, arriving in the
middle of the town of few minutes
before one o'clock.
At Goderich the pipe band
marched around the square, with
Mr. Cardiff walking ahead, and a
crowd of people on foot and in
cars following the band.
From Goderich the parade con-
tinued to Clinton, Seaforth, and
Exeter, with the pipe band dis-
mounting to march down the main
street of each town.
In Clinton, where Mr. Cardiff
was given a majority of 204, a
record crowd was on main street
to welcome the victors. Mr. Car-
diff made a short speech thanking
his supporters and the voters for
their confidence in him.
For Mr. McLean, one of the
problems of the evening was to
find his opponent, to congratulate
him on his victory. As soon as
the swing to Cardiff became ob-
vious in the trend of the returns,
the workers in McLean's commit
tee room at Seaforth started try-
ing to locate Mr. Cardiff by tele-
phone so that Mr. McLean could
speak to him directly, and voice
the sentiments of a good loser. It
was not until two o'clock that the
two candidates finally carne to-
gether, at Seaforth, and were able
to shake hands.
"On the basis of the results as
announced for Huron, it is appar-
ent there is a majority for Mr.
Cardiff," said Mr. McLean, in an
election -night statement made be-
fore the final count was complet-
ed. "Accordingly," said Mr. Mc-
Lean, "I concede the election to
him. We have worked hard,' be-
cause I believed that we had
something to say that would be of
benefit to everyone in this con-
stituency. I offer my best wishes
to Mr. Cardiff, who willrepresent
the new riding of Huron in the
next House of Commons, and I
know that he, like myself, will
hold the interests of Huron County
paramount in his thoughts."
