Know Family a RCAF
Man Drowned Recently
(By our Bayfield correspondent)
It's a small world after all and
tragedy brings people closer to-
gether. • The recent death by
drowning. of LAC Nowell Gagnon
who was on course at RCAF Sta-
tion, Clinton, brought a letter of
inquiry from Mrs. Hugh Camp-
bell (formerly Opal Dyer) 755
Boulevard Des Chutiz, Quebec 5,
to relatives 'in Bayfield.
On Saturday Mrs. Walter West-
lake received a letter from Opal
telling her of the fine family who
live next door to them. There
had been seven sons and four
daughters. They were grief strick-
en by the death: of the youngest,
son, Nowell. They had heard three
rumours, first to the effect that
he had fallen off the pier and
drowned; second; that he had div-
ed in to rescue someone else and
perished himself; third, that he
had gone to the rescue of another
lad and both had been drowned.
The family .couldn't understand it,
for he had been a strong and ex-
pert swimmer. They wished to
know what really had happened.
Mrs. Westlake wrote immediat-
ely explaining how he had been
caught in the strong currents in
the rough water at the mouth of
the pier. She enclosed newspaper
clippings and asked Opal to con-
vey to Mr. and Mrs. Gagnon and
family the sympathy which was
felt locally for them.
