STRRIIT LIGHTING, The council will meet next Monday 'tight when it is to be hoped that the matter of lighting our streets at Hight will be considered. The necessity of having lamps oe the principal streets I ee become quite patent to all, and by furnishing them the council luerit the blessing of a suffering pub, tic—for they most assuredly do sutler when they attempt to walk the streets on a dark night, Tun This haa heretofore discussed this sebject, and it is scarcely necessary to again enter into details, but we simply motion the matter in order that it may not escape the memory of our town fathers next Monday nig,ht. NEW JUSTICES OF THE PEACE. TIIE TIDIES is pleased this week to announce the appoietment, by the On- taria Government, of Messrs. Geo. McKibben, Welter Scott and John J. Anderson as Justices of the Peace for this town. Through the disqualifica- tion of two of our Justices it was nec- essary that others should bo appoint. ed, and it was just as necessary that the number should be increased. The appointees are all men of integrity, character and ability, who are well qualified for the position and who will add dignity to the offee shills has been thrust upon them. The time inter- vening between nomination and oleo - tion days is so shert, and the list of candidates usually so large, that it is almost impossible to form a proper es- timate of and make a judicious selec- tion from the candidates in the field. Therefore it is much better on all sides that those who wpm becoming can. didates should signify their intention somewhat ahead of the usual time Thus far, of course, the list is a yery meagre one, but we hope within the next iiiionth at least to see a number forthcoming. We are in a position to state definitely that Mayor Neelands will be a candidate for re-election, and many will be pleased to learn this fact. Mr. Neelands has proved hira- self a judicious and capable chief raagistrate. He has devoted much of his time and energy to the duties of his office, and the town has reaped no little benefit from his unceasing and untiring efforts in its behalf. THE TIMES is in receipt of• -acom- munication from a correspondent who complains that one of the clergymen at the recent harvest home festival in the town hell here took occasion to eulogi9 our Government as the best in, the world, and he wishes an ex- planation. We presume, and it is to be hoped for the rev. gentleman's owu sake, that he referred to our system of government in general name than the present Government in particular, for we can hardly conceive how any Christian minister could fever the gross corruption of our Dominion Government and its conduct in the complication of the license question and the harm it has doue to the cause of temperance. It might be better were clergymen, as well as others, to he a little more explicit when express- ing their opinions on governments, in order that their remarks might not be misunderstood or misconstrued. THANKSGIVING day will be observed this year en Thursday, November 12t11. It wus originally proclaimed for the 7th, but as that fell on a Saturday— the busiest day in the week for the merchant—it was thought advisable to make the change. The day will • thus be more universally observed.
