borne, visited with her parents in
Brucefield last weekend. She was
accompanied by Thelma, Donald
and Eleanore Snelling arid Jimmy
Leslie, also from Port Colborne.

Miss Janet Watson to Aylmer and

Mr. and Mrs. L, Finlayson and
family moved this week into one
of the Simpson apartments re-
cently vacated by Mr. and Mrs.
F. Burdge, who have moved into
their new house in the village just
south of T. A. Dutton's store.
Woman's Association Meets
The January meeting of Bruce-
field United Church Woman's As-
sociation was held in the Sunday
School room on Tuesday, January
6. Mrs. C. Christie and Mrs.
Douglas took charge of the de-
votional.
After the singing of hymn 571,
Mrs. Douglas gave a reading, "Are
You an Active Member, or Do You
Just Belong?" Mrs. Christie read
the scripture and 'hymn 383 was
sung.
The president, Miss Martha Mc-
Donald, took the chair and the
minutes of the last meeting were
read and adopted. Roll call was
answered by 30 members. Mrs.
Berry gave the treasurer's report
and -it was moved by Mrs. W.
MacBeath, seconded by Miss M.
Swan that the association give the
managers $1,000. This was carried.
Reports of various committees
were read and groups were chosen
for the new year. The meeting
closed with the singing of "Let the
Beauty of Service be Seen in Me."
Auburn School Meeting.
The annual school meeting of
USS No. 5, Hullett (Auburn
school) was held in the school on
Wednesday afternoon. William C.
Craig was elected trustee replac-
ing Gordon R. Taylor who retired
after nine years of service. The
other trustees are Kenneth Mc-
Dougal and Maurice Bean. Frank
Raithby is secretary-treasurer.
The .3 A's "The Active Auburn
Adults" met Friday evening in the
basement of the church with Keith
Arthur in charge. Rev. Charles
Scott, Blyth United Church, was
guest speaker and gave a fine talk
dwelling largely on daily devot-
ions and family worship in the
homes.
Keith called on Mr. and Mrs.
Donald Yungblut, who have ac-
cepted positions in London and
taken up residence there. Keith
read an address expressing regret
at their departure and wishing
them every success and .happiness
in their new surroundings. On
behalf of the 3 A Group they were
presented with a lovely lamp.
Irene Arthur Made the presentat-
ion. Donald thanked the group
fittingly.
Previously to the presentation
the group held its election of
Miss Lola Elliott returned to
Detroit last week. •

Christmastide.

Christmas and New Year's with
his son, Grant Turner and family.

Mr .and Mrs. Walter M. West-
lake left on Wednesday morning
to travel by airoplane from Lon-
don to Vancouver, B.C., to visit
their eldest son, William and fam-
ily, and youngest son, Garfield.
Mrs. R. H. Middleton and Mas-
ter Bobby, who spent ten days
with her mother, Mrs. N. W.
Woods, returned to their home in
Hensall on Sunday with Mr. Mid-
dleton who was here for the day.

er, Preston, spent the New Year's
holidays with their respective par-
ents, Mr. 'and Mrs. Ed. Sturgeon,
and Mr. and Mrs. Alf. Warner,

Last week, in the obituary of
Mrs. D. Crofut, we regret that
an error was made in spelling the
name of the lady's first husband.
She married Arthur Nellor, and
the two sons surviving are Tudor
and George l\Tellor.
Mr. and Mrs. Morris Scott and
three children who have been
staying with her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Chris. Parker, Varna, since
coming from Naicam, Sask., last
fall, moved into Miss C. Clark's
house last week.

Week of Prayer Services
The week of prayer is being ob-
served in Bayfield by three united
services. The first was held last
night in St. Andrew's United
Church at which the Rev. a
Carew-Jones was the speaker.
To-night in Knox Presbyterian
Church, at which the Rev. Peter
Renner gives the address and in
Trinity Church on Friday when
Rev, D. J. Lane will be the speak-
er, Each of the services are at
eight o'clock.
The Christmas concert of St,
Andrew's United Church Sunday
School was held on December 23
with a large attendance of child-
ren and interested friends. Carol
singing by the audience was the
first item on the program; then
there were recitations by the
children, cornet duet, and cornet
and trombone music; Lynn Lis-
combe, Porter's Hill, pleased every
one with her solos; a playlet, "The
Hyrnnary" was given by several
girls• under the direction, of Mrs,
Higgins; a Christmas play entitled
"The Hidden Star" was perform-
ed by Elaine Grainger, Marion
Makins, Ruthann Scotchmer, Hel-
en Grainger, Donald Campbell and
Robert Talbot, (this short play
showed the kindliness of the
Christmas spirit); the program
closed with a pageant depicting
the manger scene, after which
Santa Claus arrived and distribut-
ed gifts and candies to the child-
ren.

Council Meeting
The inaugural meeting of the
1953 council was held in the Coun-
cil Chamber on Monday evening,
January 5, with all members pres-
ent. All members took their De-
claration of office before J. A. Pat-
erson, Justice of the Peace. Rev.
J. B. Fox addressed the Council
and offered a prayer for guidance.

The Woman's Association of
Varna United Church held its an-
nual meeting in the church base-
ment. • The meeting opened with
the president, Mrs. A, Coleman
presiding, and the singing of the
theme song, followed by the carol,
"Joy to the World," The scripture
lesson was read by Mrs. E. Moyer
and thoughts of the lesson were
given by` Mrs, George Reid.
The minutes of the previous
meeting were read by the secre-
tary, Mrs. Aldington. Miss
Rachel Johnston gave the treasur-
er's report which showed a bank
balance of $740. The ladies thank-
ed Mrs. L. McConnell and Mrs. W.
Webster for the curtains, and Mrs..

Hoy 'were appointed members of
Hensall Community Park Board
for the year 1953. Street com-
mittee will consist of W. Parke
and L. Luker. Property commit-
tee: N. Jones and H. Hoy.
The first regular meeting fol-
lowed. W. B. Cross, assessor, re-
ported several assessments made
in December which added to the
assessment roll for 1953. The total
assessment was $702,614.
E. R. Davis, chief of police ask-
ed council for a raise in salary of
about $400.00 per year and after
considerable discussion a motion
was passed, that E. R. Davis be
paid $200 per month.
J. A. Paterson, treasurer, repor-
ted a very Substantial cash balan-
ce this year because of low tax ar-
rears and the grants that had been
received. He reported tax arrears
of $586.76, the lowest in years at
this date.
A petition was received from
several interested ratepayers com-
plaining about the smoke nuisance
and fire hazard created by the fire
burning on the W. G. Thompson
and Sons Ltd. property and asking
for its abatement. Clerk was in-
structed to notify the W. G.
Thompson and Sons Ltd. that the
Council have received a petition
signed by several ratepayers in
the vicinity of their property
complaining about the smoke and
fire menance created by them, and
Council request that the same be
stopped immediately.
