New Type Of War

Seven contingents of Veterans
a two World .Wars, numbering
350 attended a drumhead service
held in Goderich last Sunday in
connection with that town's old
home week celebration.
The Rev. 13. g. Farr, padre of
Branch 109, Canadian Legion,
Godericb, was in charge of the
service.
Group Captain E...A, D. Hutton,
CD, Commanding Officer, RCAF
Station, Clinton, was the guest
speaker, He spoke on the ideo-
logical war now being waged.
The following is his address in
full:
"Friends, as I look about me
today, I see among., you ex-ser-
vicemen, veterans of both world
wars intermixed. You legion-
naires know what fighting is and
you also know of the endless
pain and misery which always
accompanies armed conflict. To-
day, I want to talk about war—
but not the shooting war as fought
in the past or as may be fought
in the future. The ideological
war which is now in progress is a
new type of war in which the
weapons and the tactics employed
are 'completely different from
those we have experienced bet
fore. The weapons are, now words
and ideas and the battlefields are
spread all over the World , where-
ever g clash of political, economic
or social aspirations occurs. This
struggle is as deadly as any battle
the world has ever seen and it is
as real as life itself.
Re-armament General
"The world today is in a very
unsettled state. Intensified' prob-
lems of production and distribu-
tion of food and materials have
upset the economies of many na-
tions and affected the economics
of all. Political unrest an& social
upheaval among nations has lead
to a redistribution of world pow-
er. Many countries are feverish-
ly re-arming to meet the ever-
present threat of war and these
countries are now grouping into
two armeoVeamps, one under the
leadership of the Union of'Soviet
Socialist Republics and the other
a group of democratic nations
looking to the English speaking
countries for 'guidance and aid.
Western Civilization Decadent
"It is a common trend arriong
us these days to blame commun-
ism for all the troubles and ills
of the free western world. How-
ever, the real cause goes Much
deeper, a fact which we often'
conveniently ignore. Remember
that communism is an outgrowth
of our present western civiliza-
tion. Like a boil, it is an evi-
dence of poison within our sys-
tem of living, evidence of moral
compromise and decay within
' ourselves as individuals. Com-
, munisin feeds on this poison and
to rid ourselves of this menace,
we must deal first of all with that
moral compromise and decay.
1 ., "The foundation of the com-
munist philosophy is the under-
lying idea that the world must
and will be changed. To carry
out this philosophy, the com-
munists will use every means at
their disposal, economic, political,
I military or psychological. When
one force fails to accomplish the
desired result, then another force
is brought to bear and so the
struggle goes on. While not deny-
ing the need for changes in our
present system, yet we of the
free democracies dispute both
the means of changing them and
the nature of these changes.
Might and Ideology
"We of the 'western world have
two major forces to combat—Rus-
sian military might and the corn-
Mtn-list ideology which that might
was created tq siletain. After two
world Wars, wherein in both
cases we won the war but lost
the peace, it is • clearly evident
that to win on the military front
is not enough. The struggle for
men's, hearts and minds goes on
and itis only by winning the war
of beliefs that we secure victory
on every ether front and so en-
sure a lasting peace, We must
remember that an ideology can
only be overcome and conquered
by a superior ideology,
Communism Threatens Family
"The communists have an
ideology-1-a vital and dynamic
doctrine which amounts to a re-
legion, a religion without God,
Within the confining boundaries
of their creed, the family has
ceased to exist as the source of
moral guidance to the Individual.
Instead, we see a culture based
entirely upon materialistic aims.
A culture which threatens our
way of life, not because of its
strength within, but because of
our own obvious weaknesses,
Christian Teachings
"Do we have or can we• de-
velop a superior ideology with
which to combat and' destroy the
.creeping paralysis of communism?
I have never doubted, nor do I
doubt today, that we have the
elements upon. which such an
ideology can , be foulided. That
we subscribe to the Golden Rule
is illustrated by such proposi-
tions as the Marshall Plan, the
Mutual Aid Pact, and the Colom-
bo plan. These, propositions, ad-
vanced by the western powerb for
the economic and social better-
ment of less-favoured parts of
the -world, indicate a common and
united faith in our own way of
life: In addition, there exists In
the western world today our in-
trinsic belief in the Christian
teachings with their' moral and
spiritual values. On these fund-
amental elements our entire
ideology, our very existence, de-
pends.
"Until now most of us have
not gone beyond the lip service
stage -in acknoWledgement of
these ideals. We have talked
about them a good deal, but we
have not practiced them, or liv-
ed according to them, with any
intensity. Material thoughts have
become uppermost in our minds
and these thoughts have taken
precedence over our moral and
spiritual obligations, As a result,
a new and enervating feeling has
infiltrated into our seciety. If
others choose to reject ,our ideas
and thereby threaten our whole
way of life by force, then we
also can, resort to force to sup-
press and destroy them, This is a
comfortable and complacent feel-
ing, but the fallacy of it lies in
the fact that it is the same view
that,has already swept us •into
two orld wars and now threat-
ens to involve us in another, with
even more terrible consequences.
Must Win Peace
- "Will be never lea4m that to
win the war is not enough? We
must also win the peace and the
only way to' accomplish this is
to demonstrate beyond any doubt
that our way of life, our ideology,
is the only means by which man
can progress in the attainment of
his ultimate goal.
"Can we substantiate this fact
by pointing to our present, every-
day life as an example? I think
not! No one can deny that here
in North America, and in other
parts of the world where a high
standard of living is enjoyed,
people have developed an in-
creasingly materialistic outlook
on life, almoet in proportion to
their good fortune. This outlook
has flourished at the expense of
many of the principles held by
our fathers, and their fathers be-
fore them. Canada, as a democ-
racy, arid a free nation, was made
possible by the application of
these principles and yet now we
propose to replace them with a
new ideal—material gain.
Are Our Moral Values Worthy?
"Our country is now threaten-
ed to a greater degree than ever
before. Day by day, powerful
forces are undermining the
foundations on which our way of
life is based. Social and economic
pressures, through their outward
political and military manifesta-
tions, are compelling us to re-
view our position. Now is the
time for us to reconsider our
moral and spiritual values and to
determine whether or not they
are worthy of survival. This is
the battle with which we are
faced and it must be fought and
won long before we can expect
to reap the benefits of a ieacet
won by a "hot" war. This is. the.'
so-called ideological war and it
narrows down to a conflict bee '
tweeri communism, which seeks
to overthrow the present system,
and democracy which is based on.
the propotition that man must
always go forward, that he must
always strive to improve him-
self, if he is to attain the ideal
goal,
No Escape
"No one can escape this ideo-
logical war. ;t is a war fought
wherever the opponents choose to
fight and with whatever weapons
the opponents choose to use,
Civilians and servicemen alike,
men, women and children are all,
involved. We have always thought
of war in terms of other lands
and distant battlefields. In the
past, this has been acceptable bee
cause of our geographical loca-
tion. However, this concept of
war must now be abandoned, This
new type of war will be fought in,
our own back yard as well as in,
Korea, in Europe, in the Middle
cast and all over the world. It
is total war. This is the war to
which General Worthington re-
ferred.' in his recent address at
Camp B.orden; the war that IS,
with us now.
Christianity vs. Communism
"Internationally, communism is
our enemy but at .,home, our
worst enemy is not dammunistio
aggression but our own complac-
ent and materialistic outlook on,
life, It is now reduced to a,
struggle for survival; a struggle
between the Christian and demo-
cratic concept of man as a creat-
ure of God and the communistic
and materialistic idea of man.
without God, These ideas can-
not c0-exist and the struggle will
continue until one or the other
triumphs. •
Our Last Chance " 1-4 .1,
"Therefore, it is up to us to
refresh our faith and trust in,
God and the church. Let us face
the future with a mutual trust
and an interdependence which is,
after all, the strongest weapon
we have to uphold our way of
life and to combat the evil forces
which threaten to envelop and
crush us. This is our last chancel
It is for us to choose whether
Or not we face up to the issue
at hand."
After addressing the Legion
members, Group Captain Hutton,
took the salute for the March.
