Saturday, June 14, will mark too.
the sixth annual Air Force Day
to be celebrated in Canada, and
the RCAF is working hard to
make it the best ever held.
The purpose of Air Force Day
is to show the public what the
RCAF is doing these days, 'The
officers and men of the Air Force
are . proud of their service and
the contribution it is making in
the defence of our Western ideas
of democracy and freedom_ They
want the public to.feel that way
Mr., Mrs, S. Thomson
Mark 25th Wedding
Mr. and Mrs, Samuel Thomson,
who reside north of Kippen, cele-
brated their 25th wedding anni-
versary Tuesday, June 3.
A surprise party was held for
them at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Milton McAdams, Zurich,
Tuesday evening when 60 rela-
tives and friends met to honour
them and to present them with a
cabinet of silver.
Mrs. Elmore Keys, Varna, read
the address, and the presentation
by Mrs. Charles Allison, Exeter.
A period of music was enjoyed
and refreshments served.
The major portion of the Can-
adian defence budget is allocated
to the RCAF. With this money,
the Air Fame purchases the very
best equipment available such as
the F-88 Sabre, holder of the
official world speed record; the
CF-100 Canuck, Canadian-design-
ed-and-built all-weather iet
fighter, the T-33 jet-trainer, twin
seat version of the F,80 Shoot-
ing Star, the latest radar and
electronic equipment, and mute
erous other devices, large and
small, to make Canada's Air
Force one of the most up-to-date
in the world. In addition, there
is no finer training than that re-
ceived by RCAF air and ground
crews.
After the war when the Ser-
vice settled down to create the
foundation on which the present-
ly expanding Air Force is being
built, it was felt that the people
deserved an opportunity to see
What was being accomplished
with the money they paid out
in taxes to support the RCAF,
Air Force Day was the answer.
Every June since 1947 has
found the RCAF rolling out the
welcome carpet for Mr. and Mrs.
John Q. Public, and all the little
Publics. That carpet is again out
this year.

During World War II, the Al,
lies knew that the Germans were
working on, a long-range missile,
but it was not until September
1944 that the existence was first
confirmed.
Qn September .8, 1944, the first
114 was launched in. Holland by
the Germans with London as its
destination. By the end of
March, 1945,.when the last V-2
Was fired, almost 1,000 of these
missiles had landed in England.
During the same period, 1,041
V-2s were launched against Ant-
werp and 65 per cent of these
fell within a six 'mile radius of
the centre of the target.
The V-2 has. the distinction of
.being the first long-range super,-
sonic guided misile used in op-
erations, It was capable of carry-
ing one ton of explosives for a
distance of two hundred miles in
live minutes, and travelled at
speeds greatly in excess of the
speed of sound. Maximum speed
was 3,750 miles per hour. It
was powered by a liquid rocket
motor capable of deliVering 50,000
pounds of thrust. At the maxi-
mum speed of the missile, that
is equivalent to half a million
horsepower.
At the end of World War II, a
great number of the German
scientists; engineers and tech-
nicians who were responsible for
the development of the V-2 were
brought to this continent to work
AA,A.I.A...1.1r ...A.
for the Western Powers on
guided missiles projects. At the
same time, a number of captnred
German. V-2's were brought to
the USA and Canada. Many of
these have been fired in New
Mexico and have been the means
of providing valuable information
on' rocket propulsion and upper
atmospheric conditions.
One of these captured „guided
missiles is held at RCAF Station,
Clinton, and will be on public
display On Air Force Day, June
14.

BLYTH
Blyth WI Meets
Blyth Women's Institute held
an interesting meeting in Mem-
orial Hall Thursday afternoon:
with vice-president Mrs. B. Hall,
presiding.
The roll call was answered by
imitating a familiar rural sound,
resulting in a countryside.,
The Garden Club leaders, Mrs,
E. McMillan and Mrs. K. Taylor
reported 10 members in the club.
Mrs, C. Higgins gave a talk.
Mrs, Kenneth Taylor, convener
of the Agricultural Committee,
introduced the guest speaker,
Gerald W. Montgomery, agricul-
tural representative for Huron
County the topic of whose add-
ress was: "An insight into the
Department of Agriculture," with
remarks on its staff of 700 per-
manent, and 259 temporary em-
ployees.
Mr. Montgomery told of a quick
method to rid a strawberry patch
of weeds. Instead of using 2-4D
weed killer, use two to four geese
who will rid the patch of weeds
without molesting either the
strawberry plants or newly-form-
ed green fruit," he said.
A donation was allOted for
prizes at the fall fair, to be used
at the discretion of Mrs. McMillan
Mrs. K. Taylor and Mrs. Berthot,
secretary of the Agricultural Soc-
iety,
A clever skit, "The Sewing So-
ciety Meets," presented by Mrs.
E. McMillan, Mrs. C. Johnston,
Mrs. R. Madill, Mrs, B, Walsh,
Mrs. D. Howes, and Mrs. J. Law-
rie, proved amusing.
Miss Josephine Woodcock gave
a complete report of the district-
annual meeting held in Clinton.
