HOUSEHOLD FLY IS -
-DISEASE CARRIER.
The common housefly is notorious
for the part it plays in spreading dan-
gerous diseases, such as typhoid, in
fantila -diarrhoea, tuberculosis, chol-
era, and dysentry_ It is, a ntenace• to
health because it breeds in filth and
may paiss :directly to foodstuffs. Par-
ticl 's of decaying organic' matter,.
bacteria, or !other living organisms
cling .to itsghairy ,legs .and, body •and:
sticky . feet 'and mouth parts:: It in
eotnptrted that one fly. May carry as
many as '1,000,000. germs, and that te-
nxale'. hhnsefly, may become a great
'grandmother :. in 60 day laying •a-
rorind 2,700 eggs during a lifetime of
three months.. • .
Houseflies are particularly danger-
ous during warm weather from mid-
summer' to fall, when they are most
numerous. The most effective Method
of ,controlling them, consists . in elim-
inating, . or redtleing their ` breeding
places by properly treating or dispos-
sing of manure` and garbage. In the
cities, • garbage is an important factor
in • fly production_ • Control measurer
to..be fully effective should' be or
gaitiized on a coutmanity basis, becaiise'',
one neglected' garbage dump or man-
ure heap may infest a Whole neigh-
borhood. Collections of manure should
be removed from city stables and dis-
posed Of at Least twice weekly.
In •rural ' sections, where• practic-
.able, . the manure should be removed
daily and spiread thinly on fields

wind 'will present breeding. An alter-
nate method consists ofl taking •ad-
vantage of heat'. produced by ferreen-
tation, when manure is placed in tight -
