Mrs. T. Garbutt, mother of Rev. R. J.
Garbutt, Gerrie, passed away Saturday,
Nov. 24th, at the advanced age of 88
years. A largely attended service was
held in the Methodist church, Gerrie,
couducted by Rev. D. Rogers. a termer
pastor of deceased. Rev. Mr. Reeking(
of Fordsvich, assisted. in the service. .
The house occupied by Frank East-
man, at Clinton, was destroyed by fire
on. Sunday, Nov. 25th. Mr. and Mrs.
Eestmau had gone to Blyth ou Saturday
evening, leaving everything secure, as
they supposed. There was an insarance
of 0400 on the fureituro, in the Mer-
chants, and 0500 ort the house, in the
London.
The latest addition to the House of
Refuge inmates is a man from Goderich
who should have been sent to an insane
asylum, as he is a very bad case, and
should not be -where he has liberty. He
jumped from an upstair window the
other night, a distance of ebout 20 feet,
escaping injury, and. ran a mile before he
Was overtaken and brought back.

Last winter John Howard, jr., and
Donald McNeil, of Grey, cut, with the
help of a hired. Irian, 1.'45 cords of stove -
wood, hauled it out to the road and then
teamed it to either Ethel Or Atwood.
22,700 feet of saw logs were also cut, the
whole work being completed inside of
four months, They had two yearns
hauling, when they started to deliver the
wood. It was a good four months'
work all right.

society and cannot be responsible for
defective sidewalks of which they have

for defendant.
Margaret Whyte, beloved, wife of John
Drunatnand, of the Idowiek-Carriek
townliue, was buried in Clifford
cezoteery. On Tuesday, Nov. 20th, a
baby girl was born, and after child
birth, other complicated troubles set in,
which proved too heavy a strain on the
weakened mother. She was attended
by the best of local and distant medical
help, but all in vain, she succumbed on
Monday evening of last week. Au un-
fortunate accident occurred to Mr.
Drummond on Monday morning, Nov.
26th. He was engaged in cutting tur-
nips with a slicer, driven by winchnil
power, when his right haud was
accidentally drawn into the cutting box.
Elis hand is badly lacerated but no
serious consequences are anticipated.
This week we havo to report the death.
of Jane Appleby, Sanderson street,
Wroxeter, who died on Friday, Nov.
23rd. She was born near Owen Sound
where she lived with her parents about
5 years, then she moved with her
parents to the township of Turnberry,
10 con. About 3 years ago they moved
to Wroxeter. Miss Appleby" had been
uiling for 14 years and the last 3 years
was helpless, her mother having to 'at-
tencl to her wants as she was not able
to walk and had to be carried. to where -
ever she wanted to go, She was 37
years and 27 days old. There is left to
mourn a father, mother and. brother.
Funeral was well attended by the com-
munity and. especially from the 10th of
Turnberry. Three of her aunts were
present:—Mr.. 33urgess, and Mrs. Ortop,
of Uxbridge; and Mrs. Page, of Toronto.
Her remains were laid to rest in the
Wroxeter cemetery.
On Tuesday eveniug, Nov. 20th, there
assembled at the residence of James
Worrell, Orange Hill, about one hund-
red invited guests to witness the marri-
age of his youngest (laughter, Jennie to
Mr. J. J. Montgomery. The Nuptial
knot was securely tied by Rev. Ft. J..•
Garbutt, L. L. B., of Gerrie. The bride
was beautifully attired in einiiiman
brown silk and wore a bridal veil trim-
med with orange blossoms. Miss
Emily Spottou, of Toronto, gracefully
acted the part of bridesmaid, while the
groom was ably attended by his brother,
Mr, Alex. Montgomery, of Wtoxeter.
After the congratulations were over ell
repaired to the dining -room where a
most sumptuous dinner was served.
The evening was most enjoyable spurt
ehip. Except for the few years that he
lived in Brussels lie hasresided tu the
township ever since. Ile prospered for
many years, and had n fine farm of, 200
acres, but ale unfortunate shipment of
bellies to the Old Country 501110 years
ago resulted dieastroaely. Deceased
was twine married. By his lira wife
he /eaves two sons and two. daughters.
The sons are Ira of Brassols and Joseph
of Napalm(); the daughters are Mrs.
Wm. Bust•ell of Duluth, Minn., and
Miss Maggie in Wingham. By WS
second wife, who surrivea him, he has
two -daughters, Georgie and Lottie. Mrs.
Berkey of 13e1geave, Mrs, -Joseph. Clegg
of Morris and Mrs. \Valiant Clegg of
Wiugham are sisters of the deceased.

Walter Dunlop, minister of a U. P.
cheirch in Dumfries, saw a number of

ing, he suddenly stopped in his sermon

this general exhortation was insufficient
o doter a certain well-known member of
the church. from obviously getting a
night's rest ,forevarcl, the reverend gen-
tleman turned. towards the offender and
said impressively, "James Stewart,
this is the second time I havo stopped to
waken you. If 1 need to stop a third
time, I'll expose you by name to the
whole congregation,
