COMMERCIAL HOTEL
CLOSES ITS DOORS
The Commercial Hotel, Ripley, at
One time known as one of the best
hostels in Western .Ontario,, has dos-
ed itsdoors to the public, thus wind-
ing'up the last chapter' in its- event-
,f ifl iitory, '
The hotel was opened in886 by
the late, EdwardHodgins, who was
a dell known character of early days.
He called -it the Hodgins House and
catered especially to the commercial
trade. For nearly a quarter. of a cen-
tury.he enjoyed ,adarge'share sof The
patronage of the district: At that
time there' were 'two other hotels and
a liquor store doing business in the
village, the Royal conducted by Rob-
ert Morgan and the Queen's, sou on
Huron street, .operated by .Mrs. S. A.
'Irwin. The liquor store was in con-
nection, with a .grocery flimsiness car-
ried on by Mrs. Lamont. w
Mr. Hodgins sold out to Clark
Smith, who later disposed of the bluff-
ness to Joseph Sheffield of Dundalk.
Mrs. Iridvin dosed' the Queen's •hotel
and purchased the Commercial from
Mr. Sheffield.' Travelling and dom-
estic trade was so brisk at this time
that the erection,I01 a third storey was
considered. Later this idea was aban-
doned.
1
W. W. Irwin was manager of the
hotel for a number of years, until he
purchased the Queen's Hotel in List-'
owel. He passed away in that town in
1923 and his remains were buried
from the Commercial Hotel, Ripley,
which had for so many years been
his 'home. Following Mrs. Irwin's re-
tirement : the business was taken over
by Bert Harris and W. A. Mair,' with
,. • Ca. McLeod as manager. David
Lemon was the next proprietor, who
thirteen years ago disposed of it to
Charles Strathdee. Since the death of
Mr. Strathdee in, 1932. the hotel has
been under the management of Floyd,
Strathdee. .
Changing condi'tionb have rendered{
the operating of two hotels in the
village rather unprofitable and for
this reason the latter ,decided to seek
his fortune in another field.
And thus a long" and varied history

brought to a close. It . is- understood"
the` present owner, Allan McIver has
mans for the conversion of the build-
ing for . another line of trade. The
suggestion has been offered that a
reanrery might be successfully 'op•
'-rated If so it would be a boon to
Ripley and the surrounding country.
