badly needed in the sehooi.

The government grant to the school
for tic year is $271.00.
Replies were read from the Walker -
vine and Preston seat companies with
prices and designs of their stock. The
Secretary was instructed to order 32
doable desks and single seats, and four
rear seats for Miss Vanstone't room
front the Canadian Oce and School
Furniture Company of Preston. The
eatitnated cost of seating the room is a
little over $150.00-,
It was decided that a thorough e-N.ar11•'
inaction be made of the school in order
to ascertain what repairs 'Mould] he
necessary so put the building in thorough

Dave McMannus, at one time operator
in the C. P. R. office here, is home now
for his holidays, after an absence of five

agent on the 0. P. R. in the Northwest.
James Dawson, of Archdale, Wilson
& Co, Hamilton, is spending a few days'
vacation. at home. "Jim" has had a
very pleasant trip since Easter over his
eastern territory to Nova Scotia and
Cape Breton,
Ernie Sellery returned to his home in
Woodstock on Tu ay. He was
accompanied as fair as Clinton by
Willie Orr, who will visit at that point
before reternind hone. Both young
men are wheeling.
Mr, and 114irs. O. Gilchrist and
daughter Annie, are spending a month
with Mr. Gilchrist's brother at Tiverton.
The many friends of Mr. Gilchrist will
hope that the lake breezes will 'rave a
benefical effect on his health.
Robt, Carruth, of Bell's factory has
taken a position in the Hepworth fad-
tory. As a trombonist he will be much
missed in the band. Mr. McDonald, of
Chapmaa's tannery, who plays a olaro-
iete has left for Woodstock.

The West End Football Club of St.
LOUIS, the champion association club of
that eity, and which has clefeated all
comers, including the crack Detroit club
last season, is: going to make a tour of
Canada during July or August. They
will play the Marlborough team in
Listowel.
A very closely contested base ball
thatch was played on the evening of the
30th of June between. the Ladies' Base
13a11 Clab of Carinunuoek, and the ai1-
ver Corners Club ou the 14th con., Eliva.
After 1a hours hard playing it was
found that Silver Corners had rolled up
42 runs while the visitors had scored 43,
thus winning the match. Instead of
ending in a free fight it ended in a suli-
per. Such is feminine influence.

tire season was defeated only twice, and
thea after a very fierce contest. Thoy
have some notable players in the club,
some of national reputation, as for in:
stauee, Frank Kavanaugh, who has the
reputation of being the greatest fulle
back in the United States. His brother
Phil., known as the "iron man,":is al-
most equally fatuous, and John Finne-
gan, known as "King Finnegan," who
gained that title from his great prowess
as a lialf-back. Paul A. McSweeney,
who plays forward, has been well-known
in football circles for a dozen years.
There are others equally well. known.
Presbytery of Huron.
The Presbytery of Huron met iu Clin-
ton on the 10th inst. Rev. J. S. Hender-
son was elected Moderator for the en-
suing six mouths. Rev. R. S. Craig, a
former Canadian, but now of New
Mexico, U. S. .A.,: being present was
asked to sit as a corresponding member.
Tho committee on standing orders of
business•reported, but a motion to con-
sider the reduction of the number of
Presbytery meetings from six to four in
a year •deferred consideration of their re-
port till next meeting. A good deal of
time was vent en the rearrangement of
augmented congregations but on account,
of- Rev. „ R.1" Hendersondeclining: to.
undertake on the ground, of his health,
three:services every Sunday. .The old
arrangement was reluctantly adopted.
A petition from D. Urquhart of Hensen,'
complaining of certain correspondents'
in the Hensall Observer by the .Rev. J.
S. Henderson, which he believed reflect-
ed on his charrcter was received and a
committee appointed to meet bothparties
for the purpose of some amicable settle-
ment of the matter. The committee
afterwards reported that they had fail-
ed
aired to come to any agreement. Standing
committees for this year Were struck and
the Presbytery adjourned to meet
September.
