THE WESTERN FAIR..
London, September tq 1.5tb,. 1900.
'Tho closing year of the century gives
every prospect of developing the most
successful Western1fair at Loudon that
has ever been seen since the institution
was first organized in 1S67. Singe that
the Direetors have been very progressive
and each year the problem has been to
find space for the hnultiftteioas exhibits,
while still leaving ample room for the
crowd to wonder at will through the
perk•111re grounds, or find seating cape-
city on the spacioas :trawl stands.
This year will witeess mauv further
additions,. together with such added cou-
vehhieneies as the experience of the past
has suggested, aid for which the success
of the past has left ample financial pro=
vision.
Sento of the largest manufacturers of

Shipping Direct to England.
The practice of direct shipment to the
Old Country, by producers is com-
paratively common iu some sections up
west. John McMillan, M. P., one of
the big feeders, has slipped a number of
head of his own feeding to Liverpool.
"Within a distance of fear miles, near
Brucefleld, there are," said Thos. Pen -
found," "no less than five feeders who
have shipped cattle of their own feeding

Murdoch has gone over with some every
year for yea es past. Mr. McEwen has
been over twice, and John Ketchen and
Mr. Aikenhead once each. About
Olandeboye, too, a few producers have
joined together in sending three or four
cars across."

Church Attendance.
The falling off in church attendance
continues to be the subject of debate.
Is it the fault of the clergy? No, it is
mot the fault of the clergy. The clergy,
as everyone who has lived long enough
to be able to draw the comparisonknows,
are superior to those of past generations
In every respect; in character, as preach-
ers, and in pastoral activity. Their con-
gregations, being better educated, are
more on a level with the preacher, and
consequently more critical. This is the
real explanation of the supposed falling
off in pulpit eloquence. Bicycles and
increased allurements of other kinds
'nay have played their part in diverting
.attendance from church, especially in
the summer. But the main cause of
,diminished attendance is diminished be-
lief in the doctrines taught and in the
alecessity and efficacy of the Church as
the instrument of salvation. The only
seal cure is a revival of faith. By
snaking the service more operatic a cer-
tain increase of attendance may 'be
drawn; but it will be an increase of
attendance at a music hall, not at, a
louse Of prayer. -Bystander in Weekly

Apples promise au abundant crop in
the Huron Tract . Cherriespromised to
be abundant, but the promise is not be-
ing fulfilled; a lot of the fruit is drop-
ping to the groand. Of plums there
are practically none. An indication of
the fruitfuilness of Huron orchards is
furnished by the Snell farm, near
Clinton. From three acres on that
farm Mr. Snell sold $450 worth of
apples in the year of the World's Fair,
and he still retained 50 barrels for his
own use. One spy in the orchard, over
forty feet across, gave sixteen barrels
four years ago. And the Snell orchard
is not cultivated, but it is treated liberal-
ly with coarse manure. "I do not spray
either," said Mr. Snell, "but every
spring I sprinkle the leaves of the trees
liberally with fresh wood ashes and I
find this serves the same purpose. I
also treat my young turnips in the same
way, and as a result of this treatment I
have no trouble with fiy."--Weekly

The iluron Tract.
Tho "Huron Tract" covers, as the
"Queen's Bush" covered of old, a some-
what indefinite area. In a sort of gen.
oral way, however, the term refers to
the county of Iluron and northern part
of Middlesex -or say from welt above
Goclerich almost down to London. This
section is one of the many gardens of
Ontario. It is not a great tract; farm
like Prince Edward, nor is it ono vast
orchard like the Niagara Peninsula. it
is rather a farming district --a district
in which cattle, hogs, dairy produce ,and -
grain all have their place. And in this
rerspcot the county of Middlesex stands
first and Tinton second lathe Province, .

Hees of time and Charcoal.
"The heat and moisture of the
summer months have a tendency to rust
metals, mildew fabrics and cover all'.
sorts of substances with mould," writes
Maria Parols of "The Caro 'of the•

Homo Journal. "Fermentation and
putrefaction develop rapidly in
vegetable axil animal substances if they
are not carefully watched. Lime and
charcoal are two aids towards , keeping -
the house sweet and dry, and the
housekeeper should if possible, provide
herself with both of these materials.
.A. barrel each of lime and charcoal . iu
the cellar will keep that part of the.
house dry and sweet. A bowl of lime'
in a damp closet will dry and sweeten
it. A dish of charcoal in a closet or

making these places sweet. The power
of charcoal to absorb cdors is much
greater directly after it has 'been burned
than when it has been exposed to tho air -
