" Now, . what does he get in the city in the even- ing, oven if he lives a carefully regu- lated life? There is no mode of life he can possibly follow which is in any way xeoupezat ve to his mental or physical being, He has never been out of hear- ing of the noises of the city or out of the range of its lights. Every eight he has slept in the polluted air of the city, and in the morning has looked out on the gray sidewalks which he sees all day long. What does such a man know of the exhilarating, refreshing and blood - quickening experience of °peeling the shutters of his chamber window upon a landscape of space and sunshine? And what is far worse, what do his wife and children know of such a blessing? Yet he deludes himself in the belief that he must live in the city so as to be in 'touch with things.' If you ask hint what those 'things' aro you invariably dis- cover that they are et a business natare, either strictly business or some social conveution which he feels has a bearing on his business. But it is business, business! Now, a man living under this pressure rarely does his best work, al- though ho fully believes that he is doing ie. Here is a queer true story about some umbrellas: A lady who keeps a sum- mer boarding house at the seashore near Boston went down the other day to look the house over and find out what must be renewed. She found numerous tun brollas left by former boarders, and, tying them together, she took the bundle to Boston to have them repaired. She stopped in at Hovey's and laid the bundle on the floor at her foot at the counter. When she had made her pur- chase she forgot her umbrellas, and absent-mindedly picked• up an umbrella lying on the counter, thinking it was hers, or not thinking at all, and started off. Then the owner of the umbrella, a woman standing next her, seized her and said very sharply: "You have taken my umbrella!" Of course, she apologized, feeling much cut up about it, and went on, forgetting in her fluster her own buneUe of umbrellas. The next day, on her way to Cambridge, she went to Hovey's and readily recovered her lost package of umbrellas, which had been kept for her. On the car to Cambridge she noticed a woman eyeing her very closely. Presently this woman leaned Toward and said to her, with elegant emphasis: "You seem to have been more for- tunate to -day I" It was the woman whose umbrella she had taken the day before. Dixon, a prominontMethoa dist clergyman of Stroudsburg, Pennsyl- vania, will be called upon to defend in court an answer to a prayer offered can- ing for Divine veugance on a brewery. Capitalists recently erected a large brewery in Rev. Mr. Dixon's parish. It caused much comment and was made the subject of a vehement prayer from the minister, in which he called upon God to strike with lightning the new brewery* being erected in that town. Shortly after, daring a violent storm, lightning struck the brewery partially wrecking it, and knocking from a lad - dor two sons of another Methodist min- ister who were at work on the building. No ono was killed and the brewery was nob burned, but the prayer created so much cerement that the capitalists who were prominent its social circles, decided that they were engaged in a legitimate calling and should not bo made the tar - got of pulpit imprecations, as it injured the social standing of themselves and fai'inilies. Lawyers who have looked up the case say the mon have a first-class cause for notion, and it is stated the ease will be fought to a finish in the'oourts. ST.:S.IrOTTSTIN.C.
