About four o'clock on Friday after-
noon a very welcome telegram an-
nounced that Mafeking had been
relieved. In fifteen minutes the bell
was ringing, guns firing, whistles blow-
ing, fire -crackers exploding, people cheer-
ing, and two score flags were flying.
The streets were soon crowded.
A. J. Sebastian taking the enthus-
iasm in the flow -tide called on
the members of the band at their re-
spective places of work and requested
them: to appear for parade at half -past
seven-, The town then quieted down to
almcist its usual serenity until that hour.
Shortly after the appointed time the
band resembled at the town hail and
marched, headed by Dram -major
• Wightmnan, to the Queen's Hotel corner.
• The first selection given was God Save
the Queen, and never was an audience
maaore solemnly reverent, through thank-
fulluess, no doubt, that the God of
13attles had let the sunlight of His
favour shine on the arras of our much
loved Widow of Windsor. When other
airs had been played Mayor Clegg
addressed the large number of people
gathered, from a wagonnette containing
the councillors and some prominent
citizens. The Mayor's words were
markedly appropriate. Brief reference
