Now that the budget debate is finally out of the way, there is promise of some progress in the serious business of the session. Very little has yet been done with the estimates, and it is seldom that they are disposed of in less than five weeks; moreover the Opposition threat- ens to divide the House early and often upon many items therein contained, so that there is small prospect of any time, being saved, and if the session is brought to a conclusion in time to let the mem- bers reach their homes by Dominion Day, everyone will be profoundly thank- ful. There are however those who doubt if even that distant date will see prorogation an accomplished fact. "DIRE DISASTER" BY THE SEA. Evidences of the dire disaster which according to Sir Charles Tupper, was to overtake Canadian commerce when the Liberals came into power, continues to accumulate. According to "The Ameri- can Miller," orders for machinery for six new roller flour mills have been sent from New Brunswick points within a few weeks past. The mills will have a capacity of fifty barrels daily each, and will be located at Andover, Lakeville, Bristol, Centreville, Canterbury; and Killam's Mill, and it is said that another mill may be built a Moncton. When these new mills are built and running there will be eighteen mills in operation in New Brunswick, and it is expected that the combined capacity of the mills of that Province* will soon reach 1,000 barrels a day. A careful reading, however, showed us the actualtruth of the matter. We im- nnediately sat down and wrote a beautiful Te Deem for Mr. Kerr. Our devil chants it every morning while sweeping scut the office, and even as we write his rich Mello baritone comes floating into .anur sanctum from far away over cases, land presses, and forms. On Wednesday our schools will cele- -Irate Empire Day, a day named by the ducation Department to be marked by uexercises tending tocultivate the em- lbryo of patriotism that sprouts iu the :ten -thousand bosoms of our country's O';little igen and women. There is no subject that these kings and queens take snore interest in than the stories of ?Canada's great men, the gallant deeds of anincl and hand that have made our country what it is. But our department aims at a wider patriotism, the love of the Empire. Never have conditions been store favorable than now to teach the child what the Empire and Mother Land are to us, and we to them. We have„ since last Empire Day, entered ' tpon a new era. The child should :understand our new relati-n to the Mistress of the Seas, and what grander, *better, nobler people we may become as . result of it. To teach this there can be no necessity in decrying our brothers to the south, or France, or Germany. GOING AHEAD IN ONTARIO. The session of the Ontario Legislature which has just closed the first session of the reconstructed Govermnent, has been marked by au unusual amount of progressive and aggressive legislation which cannot fail to give tremendouas impetus to the development of the re, sources of the Province. Liberal terms have been made with various develop- ment companies commanding ample capital by which the vast possibilities cf that New Ontario north and west of Lake Superior, which was visited by the legislators last summer will be opened up, and in a short time millions will be spent in the erection of pulp mills, and other industries. It is the beginning of a movement which will make Canada the greatest paper -producing country in the world. The new mining regulations will do much to prevent speculators from tying up iron _ mines, and will assure the expenditure of millions of dollars in this Province in the erection of worka for refining nickel ores. The Government's policy of supply cold storage facilities to farmers is also likely to be productive of good results; and in a score of other ways, both by enacting ne'v legisltition, and by improving that already on the statute books, has the Ross Administration shown itself well worthy of the confidence reposed in it by the people and fully capable of suc- cessfully governing the premier province of the premier colony of the premier empire of the world.
