Occasionally we see reproductions of
curious advertisexueuts, whether they are
real or simply the work of a humorist, I
never could tell. Recently we have
been searching for ourselves, and up to
date have unearthed four specimens. In
the advertising columns of church
notices we found the following: --
Western Congregational chxuoh. J,
W. PedIey, pastor. Subject: Heaven
or Hell; which? All welcome.
I think it was W. A. Murray who last
week advertised: Ladies' night-gowns,
suitable for every day wear.

Through the "'courtesy of Mr. Alex
Hyslop, M. P. 11., we received ou Mon-
day last a session ticket of admission to
the speaker's gatlleiy at the Provincial
Parliameut buildings. We heard Mr.
Whitney, and the Hon. G. W. Ross, and
Andrew Pantile, and Misoampbell, and
Marter, and se' eral other valuable arti
cies too numerous to mention. I con-
fess that I onc&had an ardent desire to
enter a political.eareer, in feat I had
gone so fax as tri learn three of the Latin
phrases necessary, but the fire of that
ambition was teetotally quenched after
listening to the leader of the Opposition
speak for four liours and a half. The
fire -damp began to operate after he had
been speaking seven minutes. We
would sooner be: the one -legged, blind,
deaf-and-dumb man who begs at the cor-
ner of Queen anti Yonge, than the Speak-
er of the House. Were he not a fat
man he would never stand it.
The half -respect shown is rather hum-
orous. They stand bravely up while the
Speaker prays for the Queen and all the
royal family. :Then they sit down and
put on their hats and read newspapers,
and talk to each other, and whistle on
pages, and go out and come in, and
pound. on their desks, and then do it all
over again. I is impervious, too, so
Mr. Speaker told them, that the mem-
ber they were addressing was to be
termed the honorable gentleman oppo-
site. This leads to clot of poetry, the
poetical figure 4 of oxymorom being
especially prominent, for one may often
hear such stater/lents as, "the honorable
gentleman opposite is a liar, a thief, a
corruptionist, atc."; not in so many,
words of course, but that is what they
mean.

NEW ZEALAND'S LAWS,
menu 010700 -Operator, Owen Sound.)
New Zealand is a country that affords
r strilring example of the benefits of wise
legislation. Here 111 Canada our monop-
oly fed politicians are constantly* warn -
are • us of the danger of "paternal
legislation," The people of New Zea -
laud, however, have thrown all such
interested advice to the winds, and have
enacted laws which, to our benighted
minds, seem almost revolutionary, But
the beneficent results are so plain that
they aro attracting the attention of the
cieiiized world, and the adoption of
similar legislation in our own country is
much to bo desired.
Hon, J. G. Ward, formerly treasurer
'of the Colony, and probably its ablest
financier, said iu an interview some time
ago in. the United States.
"There aro not many people in New:
Zealand who would now suggest any
attempt to repeal any of the social leg-
islation we have placed upon our statute
books."
The New Zealand government owes
and operates 2200 miles of railroads,
employing 6000=hands, who work only
night hours a day and whose wages are
30 per cent higher than the wages on
Canadians Railways, and yet a
passenger can ride 30 exiles for 10 cents,
while the annual profit to the govern-
ment is $2,500,000.
The government owns and °palates,
also on the same principles and with
equal success, the telegraph, telephone
and express businesses.
In all government construction work
the laborers are allowed to elect their
own foremen. •
The railways carry children to and
from school free.
Children between 7 and 14 years Must
attend school, and there axe free high
schools and universities.
Women have the franchise equally
with men, and any voter who fails to
vote at any election is struck off the roll
until a satisfactory reason is given for
the neglect.
The government has a life insurance
department Which does more business
than the private companies.
There is a graduated tax on land
values. .A. homestead is free of this tax
up to a value of $2,600. Beyond that
on, each $1,0001s levied, luta this rat.

the vast majority of the people own their

levied ou the Falx° principle, with It re-

Government land is held for actual
a.ttlers, and the settler is allowed a
certain sum per aoro for clearing the

also give hint three days work each
week making roads and other public im-
provements. !Are is a poiuterr for the
Ontario govornineut in connection with
its prejected crown lands scheme.
Strikes are unlu1.own owing to the
conciliatory and arbitration laws. In
case of a distaste between workers and
their employes, representatives of each
appear before;the board of couoiliatiou.
Then if they fail to come to a mutual
agroeanent, ouai representative of each,
without Iawyrs, appears before the
court of arbitr `tion, consisting of two
arbitrators chosen by the parties and the
arbitration judge, whose deoisiou is
final, A refusal to accept and act on
this decision renders the party liable to
a fine which may be as, high as $2,400.
The consequence of this law which was'.
carried by the organized Iabor, is that
there are no inpre strikes.
The early cislosing law requires all
business places}; to be closed before a,
certain hour, i.th some necessary ex-
ceptions. Eig.it hours coustitutes a
workiug day azul every worker or em-
ploye is entities to a half holiday on
Saturday withohit reduction in pay.
Every man oiawoznau who has reach-
ed the ago of d&and who has resided at
least 25 years 1.4 the colony, is entitled
to a yearly pou(ixon. up to $20, providing
that he or she ie unable to earn 1250 a
year at any occupation. If absolutely
dependent the till amount is given.
No saloons nee allowed in' the colony
but any municipality may license hotels.
If, however, a giau is seen gentler; out
of a hotel in a itate of intoxication, the
proprietor may be arrested and hired,
and for the second offence forfeits his
lideuse. Thera is very little drunken-
ness in the colony.
Children under 15 are not allowed to
work iu factoeiesa nor women, in coal
,nines. Factories are rigidly iusp33tet1:,
the word "factory" meaning any piano
where two or more people are employed.
Employers must provide good ventila-
tion and sanitation, fire escapes, protec-
tion from urtechiuery, etc., and pay
compeusatiou " in case of accident.
Wages must be paid within twenty-four
hours after they aro due. No truck
stores are allowed and no wages . ander
$10 a we' ik can be attached for a debt.
This is a brief resume of the laws
which within saveu or eight years have
comptetely revolutionized the social
conditions of New Zealand, until, at the
present day, she has nearly emptied her
jails and poor ' houses, has almost
abolished sweat shops,• strikes, tramps
and drunkards, and has more prospera
ty, more intelligence and more diffused
wealth than any country on the globe.
If follows, of course, that there is in
New Zealand, less crime, poverty, in-
temperance and misery, and fewer
tramps and paupers than are elsewhere
to be founit Why cannot we enact
such laws?
