The Mysteries of ik Pack of Cards,
.A. private eoldier by the name of
Richard Lee was taken lettere a magis-
trate, recently, for playing cards duffing
divine Perwee. It appears that a ser-
geant counuanded the soldiers at the
church, and when the parson heel read
the prayers, he took the text. Those
who had a Bible took it out, but this
soldier had neither Bible nor °mamma
prayer book; but pulling out a pack of
cards he spread them before hint. He
just looked at ono card and then at
another. The sergeant of the company
saw him, and said: "Richard, put 119
the cards; this is no place for them."'
"Never mina that," said Richard.
When the service was over, the con-
stable took Richard before the mayor..
"Well,'" soys the mayor, 'what have
you brought the soldier here for?"
"For pleying cards in church.."
"Well, so-alier, what have you to say
foryourself?"
"Much, sir, 1 halle,"
"Very good. If not, I will punish you
more than mau was ever punished,"
"I have bean" said the soldier, "about
six weeke on, the march. I have neither:
Bible nor common prayer book. I have
nothing but a pack of cards, and I'll sat-
isfy your worship of the purity of my
iatentions." And, spreading the cards
before the mayor, het began with the
ace: "When 1 see the ace, it reminds
me there is but one Gott, When 1 see •
the deuce, it reminds me of Father and ;
Son. When I see the tray, it reminds
• vie ef the Father, Sou and Ghost.
When I -see the four spot, it reminds nie'
of the four Evangelists that preaohede--
Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. When
I meet the five, it reminds ine of the Ave
wiso virgins that trimmed their lamps;
there were ten, but five were wise and
five were foolish ancl were shut out.
When I see the six,i reminds me that
in six clays the Lord made heaven and
earth. When I see the seven, it re-:
Minds me that on the seventh day Ile •
rested from the great work He had
created, and hallowed it, When I see
the eight, it remands mo of the eight
righteous' persons that.were saved, when
God destroyed the world,. viz: Noah
and his wife, with three sons and their •
wives. When I see the Mier it reminds
me of the nine lepers that were cleansed
by our Saviour -there wera nine out of
ten who never returned thaeks. When
I see the ten, it reminds me of the ten
commandments which God handed down
to Moses on table of stone. When I see
the king, it reminds Me of the King of
Heaven, which is God Almighty. When
I see the queen it reminds mo of the
Queen of Sheba, who visited Solomon,
for she was as wise a woman as he was
amen. She brought with her fifty boys
and fifty girls, all (tressed in boys' ap-
parel, for King Solomon to tell which
were boys and which wore girls. King
Solomon sent for water for them to.
wash.' The girls washed to the elbows
and. the boys to the wrist, so King
Solomon tola by that." •
"Well," said the mayor, "you have
given a good description of all the 'cercls
but one."
