was the start of his 44-year

backwards. All the lines and
stories were then composed.,
into a page,-, held together in a
chase, which was set Cm the
press ready for-printing four
pages at a time. When he first
started at 'the Expositor Leo
Hagan helped out where
needed. "1 had no formal
training and just cattle in and
learned by watching" he
says.
From 1941 to 194'. Leo
worked at the Daily Nugget in
North Bay as an ad composi-
tor. When he returned to
Seaforth in 194"1, he began
reporting sports for the Ex-
positor, and was also Seiforth
correspondent for CKNX
Radio. Wingham. the Beacon
Herald in Stratford and the
London Free Press. The Ex-
pusher's weekly sports
column "Town Whisper-
ings" was written under his
pseudonym "Lee-Hee". •
Doing so many jobs kept
him on his toes. "Every time
that fire whistle blew I'd be
out the door in my car so'
fasts" he says One evening
he noticed a lumber budding
on Seaforth's Huron Street
was on flee, so contacted the
London Free Press, The Bea-
con Herald and CKNX im-
mediately. They got reporters
here right away "I got a, nice
little bonus for that tip". he
says.
Now semi-retired Leo is
still at The Expostor a few
days a week running the
lino-type. He says he has
enjoyed the newspaper busi-
ness and would do it all over
age].
Tom Haley is also used to
the lino-type. He arrived at
The Huron Expositor 24 years
ago. Before then he ran the
local theatre for five years.
Tom is interested in all
types of woik at the ,news-
paper and began. TM the
press.'which at that time was
located on the Premises. The
press in these days, could run
as late** one or two clicietek in
the morning. "Some of the
neighbours would be down at
the windows and doors coin-
plaining that we were making
the whole building shake" he
laughs. '
Later Tom switched to
For all but three of the 114
years the Huron Expositor
has been in Seaforth. McLean
Brothers have been owners
and publishers of the paper.
The newspaper industry
was first introduced to Sea-
forth in the 1860's when the
"Express". later to be known
as the "Huron Expositor",
was established. Records of
newspapers iTi the commu-
nity in the early 60's are
scarce but it is thought that
C.H. Cull started the "Ex-
press" in 1860. According to
Belden's Perth Atlas, Alex-
ander Campbell, son of Rev.
James Campbell, Baptist mi-
nister of Logan Township, in
1862 issued the "Huron Ex-

advertising and took photo,.
His reporting assignments
brought him to Seaforth's
town council meetings. Since
then, he has learned off-set

C.H. Cull was me publisher
of the Huron Express and
J.W. Graham was the fore-
man. Culls printing office
was in the building where the
Kitchen Centre is now locat-
ed.
In November 186". Pentor
and Colborne, editors and
proprietors of the newspaper
reorganized and re-named
the paper. the Seaforth Ex-
positor. They also moved the
office to the third floor of what
is now Becker's. William F.
Luxton and George W. Ross
purchased the paper in 1869
with Murdo Young McLean
as manager. Ross later be-
came Sir George W. Ross,
