PROPERTY TAX GRANTS
While many senior citi-
zens are upset and angry
about long delays in receiving
property_ tax grants. appar-
ently the Ministry of Revenue
has paid out more than $1.3
million in such grants to
people who are ineligible to
receive them. The overpay-
ments in the first year of the
program were sent due to a
variety of computer errors,
human tnistaEes and lack of
program co-ordination.
Moreover, many senior citi-
zens are complain ing that it is
almost impossible to get
through on the telephone
number published for enquir-
ies, and many have suggest-
ed that several more lines or
phone numbers are urgently
needed. Ron Van Horne,
Liberal London North. stress-
ing the number of problems
in this connection which have
come to hiaattention, said the
senior citizens are calling for
more than platitudes. "They
want to get some action".
LIQUOR LICENCE BOARD.
The Minister of Con-
sumer and Commercial Rela-
tions. Mr. Gord Walker, has
told the Legislature that the
Provincial-Auditor was asked
in the summer of 1980 to
review the operation's of the
Liquor Licence Board of On-
tario because the government
felt "some matters had gone
awry". It now appears that a
consulting firm was hired by a
senior official of the Board
(whose wife worked for the
firm), was paid thousand of
dollars for work that, it seems
has never been done. Accord-
ing to the Provincial Auditor.
a former Executive Director
of the LLBO ordered "quest.
ionable" hospitality for
people doing regular busi-
ness with the Board.

Heap on moreT,voiid-the wind is chill;
But let it whistle as it will,
Well keep our Christmas merry still.
SirWalter Scott penned those lines, more than ISO years
ago and they still apply in our country's return to wood
stoves and fireplaces. 1'
A great many people this Christmas are facing a bleak
year what with • unemployment reaching disastrous
proportions and Canada's standard of living bringing us all
Hero are wishes expressly for our

closer to the Dirty Thirties than many care to remember.
But lei it whistle! It is the time of year when so much of
the spirit of the Christ-child hovers close to the neorts of
men and women:
We'll keep our'Christmas merry still. We will, too.
We will all try not to think of the tangled affairs of
mankind around the world. We will sing and be merry and
go carolling and, hug and kiss old friends aod family
members we have not seen. perhaps. since lastiyear.
We Twill forget some of our differences. at least for a day
or two, and let this wonderful time of year seep into our
minds and hearts remembering that God's great gift to
mankind, His only Son, was born this day.
Throw another log on the fire and cuddle up to the warmth
that thrills the soul.
Ah, Christmas. that great and gloriousday which means
so much to so many. We'll scurry out to see the grandkids
open their presents on Christmas morning. We'll share in
their wide-eyed wonderment on Christmas Eve. We'll come
back to our house for a monstrous Christmas dinner with the
whole family around the groaning board.
We'll eat too much and we'll settle back after the meal
with stomach too full but heart overflowing with love and
peace and contentment. When we feed the horses both
night and morning, we'll throw an extra scoop of oats into
the manger and probably steal half a dozen apples to satisfy
their sweet tooth as well.
And when we walk back to the house from the barn, we'll
hear the animals munching contentledly and I will pause on_
the threshold of the back door to gaze skyward. as always.
Ah, the wonderment of another Christmas..so many of
them now, all except two or three that, bring fond memories
flooding into mind and pehaps some tears flooding into the
eyes.
The memories? Too numerous to mention them all.
But what about that Christmas so many years ago when a
big, battery-powered fire truck was under the tree..and-the
year of the new tube skates...and the year Alice and I were
first married...and the year our own children shared our
wonderment.
Fthink of the struggles my parents had bringing up a
larnily_of...Ave in the Depression, the sacrifice, the love. I
think of my Dad's workworn hands and my mother's loving
smile.
I think of the 33 Christmases my own helpmate has
shared with me and thank God for her and for three
gorgeous girls and four delightful grandchildren.
And just before 1 go in the door, I will say a prayer
thanksgiving for what will always be the most wonderful
time of year.
And on earth, peace to men of goodwill.
Merry Christmas. dear friends. Merry, Christmas.

TTI:liEcrvernIen INTEREST RATES
ofES On-
tario continues to ignore the
plight of the farmers caught
in the stranglehold of unbear-
able high interest rates. Few
(arming operations can sur-
"vive under the present eco-
nomic conditions. In persist-
ent questioning to the Mini-
ster of Agriculture and Food
and the ,Treasurer, Frank
Miller, I have pointed out that
this inaction is leading to the
total disintegration of our
agriculture industry.
In is regrettable that the
Minister of Agriculture Mr.
Henderson, is forcing the
farmers to lash out through
his lack of action A major
demonstration by farmers
occurred in Owen Sound a
few weeks ago. Last week
some 150 farmers blocked off
Highway 417 east of Ottawa.
And this week, a demonstrat-
don of over 500 farmers and .
concerned citizens took place
at Port Elgin in Western
Ontario.
The. Minister of Agricul-
ture, Mr. Henderson. con-
tinues to replay that he has
provided some limited' assist-
ance to the beef industry. but
ignores that fact that the
overriding concern facing all
sectors of the agriculture
industry in this province is
high interest rates.
The Emergency Task Force
on Agriculture of the Ontario
Federation of Agriculture in
their recent report to the
government stressed that the
farmers are facing an "emer-
gency" situation and that
immediate government ac-
, tion is required. The longer
the Minister delays financial
assistance programs. the
greater the number of our
efficient farmers that are
forced into bankruptcy.
