A114 THE HURON EXPOSITOR, DECEMBER 23, 1981
Centenaires beat Exeter
Whaf's happening is a weektrdolumn, space donated by The
Huron Expositor. To list your event, call the Recreation Office at '
527-0882.
The Seaforth Cente-
naires of the Western Junior
P Hockey League finally of
a full lean' of from every-
one plus excertional perform-
ances from Ma.it McLlwain
and goaltender Data McClure
as they scored a 4-3 upset
victory over the second plaie
Exeter Hav:ks. The win was
Exeter Hawks at Hensall'
Sunday afternoon. arh win
was only the second of the,
season' in ZS games for the*
Centenaires.
ft was juit a matter of time
before the losing bubble
burst. The 'Centerfaires have
been displaying an excellent
brand of hockey during the
last 10 to 12 games.
McClure. who seems to
thrive on work. was at his best
on Sunday. especially m the
fir5t period when he stopped
all 16 shots with several of
them looking like sure goals .
It Was the third game in five
nights for the Centenaires.
who dropped two decisions
earlier in the week S-3 in
Luean on Wednesday. and
6-3 to Mitchell on Friday
night. •
In the three games Mc
Owe faced a total of 134
shots.
Mark McElwain gave the
Centenaires a 1-Q first period
Lead. He took a Bob Mammer-
steeg pass and then ripped a
drive past Hawk goaltender
Pete Parsons. Melt% ain was
at his best on Sunday chs•
playing the quality leadership
the team needs
The second period saw the
Hawks come out strong. as
they scored two goals in the
first three minutes to take the
lead. John Keinick and Ed
Willis were the marksmen
with the latter's goal coming
on the power play Just eight
seconds later. with the Cen-
tenaires Don Williamson still
in the penalty box, Ian Doig
scored a shorthanded goal on
a pass from KAN, ain to tie
the score at 2.2.
At 8:35 the Centenaires
took the lead as Mike Kelly
scored from Kevin Denomme
and Paul Smale, That goal
came on a power play. The
Centenaires outshot ' the
Hawks in the period, but
lost the services of Ian Doig
and Ken Higgins who both
incurred match penalties for
butt ending. They-were also
minus rookie defencernan
Dace Erb who left with an
injury after the first period.
The third period which in
recent games has been a
disaster for the locals was just
the opposite this time as they
completely dominated the
play.
McLlwain put the Cente-
anires ahead 4-2 at 11:54 of
the period with a real deter-
mined effort. He picked up a
pass from Smale at center ice
while skating full tilt, split the
tough Exeter defence, drew
goaltender Parsons out to
lunch. and slipped the puck
into the open net: It was one
one of the best efforts by a
Centenaire in recent years.
The Hawks drew to within
one at 16:40 as Preston
Dearing stored but the strong
forechecking and heads up
defensive play by the Cente-
naires kept the Hawks from
getting any good chances.
The locals outshot the Hawks
11-6 in the period.-but were
outshot 29-28 in the game.
The Centenaires picked up 52
minutes in penalties com•
pared to 18 for. the Hawks
The Centenaires have five
straight road games before
returning home on Fri. Jan. 8
to host the Thedford Browns.
LUCAN 5 SEAFORTH 3
In Lucan last Wednesday
night the Centenaires again
suffered a third period let-
down as the Irish scored three
unanswered tall on the power
play) goals to overcome a 1-2
second period deficit to de-
feat the Centenaires 5-3.
The two teams were tied
1-1 after the first period with
Pete Van Drunen scoring for
the Centenaires assisted by
Bob Mommersteee
The second frame saw the
Centenaires get only three
shots on the Lucan goal, but
they scored on two of them.

Seaforth neiminder Dan Mc-
Clure with 22 shots but were
only able to manage one goal.
