'And Christm s was the theme of this educational tool for grade 6 Students at the school Dec. 3. One of the aims of "Scope" is to -eliminate anxiety for students when l'onfronted with unfamiliar problems and replace it with a positive self concept; for, instance the antiery that arises.. from not knowing where to start and thus n at starting research on an unfamiliar topic. It can be a self-defeating circle. "Scope" is an acronym for five basic steps to be used researching an assignment: Selecting a topic), C (collect your information), 0 (organize material, P (pre- sent your work), and, E (evaluate). SPS has subdiv- ided each of the five steps into suggested procedures for students that don't in- timidate and are easy to understand and follow. For instance on Thursday, grade 8 students were required to select and complete the assignments related to able. The provincial Ministry of Industry and Tourism and the Ontario Ski Resorts AssOcia- tion (OSRA) have incorpora- ted three new •features into the telephone service which reports on OSRA member resorts. The service started up again Nov. 28. First, the reports on winter sports conditions throughout Ontario will include a new rating of very good, in addi- tion to those of poor, fair or good givenin past seasons. The reports .will also com- ment on surface snow condi- tions: And OSRA members are being required to post an official description of terms used in the reports. as well as a daily snow notice: 'Although Christman.. on seven cards, a specific number of which had to be in certain categories (se. math, history. etc.). It takes 10 teachers a long time to make up the cards, according to SPS principal Paul Carroll. Mr. Carroll says he'd like to see the school do more of them, perhaps on * monthly basis, but they take a fair bit of work to prepare. At one time or another the entire school gets involved in these "Scope" units, which become more exacting the higher the grade. When children are in the family. they should be instructed not to leave new playthings on the floor for others to trip over. This is also a good time of the year to check the opera- tion of all smoke detection devices in the home. the notices won't be seen by skiers until they reach a resort, they will ensure that ski operators give accurate information for the telephone service. It is a time when families gather together. 'and that often means travelling. Sometimes long distance travelling.. Before starting out. the council suggests that vehicles should be thoroughly checked, since few service stations operate during the holiday period, and spare parts may be difficult to obtain in an emergency. Drivers should be well- rested before starting a long journey, and should eat and drink carefully to help avoid fatigue. Meat and vegetables with milk or coffee are prefer- able to a- greasy hamburger with a couple of beers. Sufficient time should be allowed for the journey. with consideration given to wea- ther and road conditions. After a heavy meal, it would be wiser to stay overnight and return. wide awake. next day. One night in a hotel or with friends is preferable to a week in hospital or Worse. On-the-job, Christmas lunches or parties are inevit- able. The safety council suggests moderation be the key word. Eat before drink- ing. and if possible, arrange car pools with non-drinking drivers. Otherwise, use a bus or taxi to get home or back to the office. Employers can do much to ensure that company func- tions are enjoyable/ without risking the lives of employees driving home, or other inno- cent people. hi the home, fire safety is most important at this time of year.
