"Scope" is not necessarily
a mouthwash, or a rock
itrottp. les an educational
tool that looks like fun at
Seaforth Public School.
'And Christm s was the
theme of this educational
tool for grade 6 Students at
the school Dec. 3.
One of the aims of "Scope"
is to -eliminate anxiety for
students when l'onfronted
with unfamiliar problems and
replace it with a positive self
concept; for, instance the
antiery that arises.. from not
knowing where to start and
thus n at starting research
on an unfamiliar topic. It can
be a self-defeating circle.
"Scope" is an acronym for
five basic steps to be used
researching an assignment:
Selecting a topic), C (collect
your information), 0
(organize material, P (pre-
sent your work), and, E
(evaluate). SPS has subdiv-
ided each of the five steps
into suggested procedures
for students that don't in-
timidate and are easy to
understand and follow. For
instance on Thursday, grade
8 students were required to
select and complete the
assignments related to
able. All electrical light sets
saved from previous years
should be carefully-inspected
before use. Any with frayed
wires, loose connections or
plugs are best discarded, and
replaced. Lights should not
be left on when the tree is
unattended. and never when
the house or apartment is left
empty even for a short time.
After gifts are opened.
Ontario skiers will have
an expanded and improved
ski report service at their
fingertips this winter.
The provincial Ministry of
Industry and Tourism and the
Ontario Ski Resorts AssOcia-
tion (OSRA) have incorpora-
ted three new •features into
the telephone service which
reports on OSRA member
resorts. The service started
up again Nov. 28.
First, the reports on winter
sports conditions throughout
Ontario will include a new
rating of very good, in addi-
tion to those of poor, fair or
good givenin past seasons.
The reports .will also com-
ment on surface snow condi-
tions: And OSRA members
are being required to post an
official description of terms
used in the reports. as well as
a daily snow notice: 'Although
Christman.. on seven cards, a
specific number of which had
to be in certain categories
(se. math, history. etc.). It
takes 10 teachers a long time
to make up the cards,
according to SPS principal
Paul Carroll.
Other aims of the -Scope"
units are: to give pupils a
plan of attack for any re-
search vim to enable
pupils to make effective use
et all research materials
available, to develop it posi-
tive attitude toward inde-
pendent research. to provide
students with st: opportunity
to pursue topics of interest to
them. and to provide a
uniform method of instruct-
ion for research skills at SPS:
"Scope" has been at the
school Ter about the last five
years says librarian and
resource person Gwen Patter
son. Mr. Carroll says he'd
like to see the school do more
of them, perhaps on *
monthly basis, but they take
a fair bit of work to prepare.
At one time or another the
entire school gets involved in
these "Scope" units, which
become more exacting the
higher the grade. There's an
intermediate mathematics
"Scope" unit at the school in
January.
waste materials should be

they should be instructed not
to leave new playthings on
the floor for others to trip

This is also a good time of
the year to check the opera-
tion of all smoke detection
devices in the home.
the notices won't be seen by
skiers until they reach a
resort, they will ensure that
ski operators give accurate
information for the telephone
service.

As the festive season
approaches. the Canada Safe-
ty Council offers some useful
information to Canadians
celebrating Christmas.
It is a time when families
gather together. 'and that
often means travelling.
Sometimes long distance
travelling.. Before starting
out. the council suggests that
vehicles should be thoroughly
checked, since few service
stations operate during the
holiday period, and spare
parts may be difficult to
obtain in an emergency.
Drivers should be well-
rested before starting a long
journey, and should eat and
drink carefully to help avoid
fatigue. Meat and vegetables
with milk or coffee are prefer-
able to a- greasy hamburger
with a couple of beers.
Sufficient time should be
allowed for the journey. with
consideration given to wea-
ther and road conditions.
After a heavy meal, it would
be wiser to stay overnight and
return. wide awake. next day.
One night in a hotel or with
friends is preferable to a week
in hospital or Worse.
On-the-job, Christmas
lunches or parties are inevit-
able. The safety council
suggests moderation be the
key word. Eat before drink-
ing. and if possible, arrange
car pools with non-drinking
drivers. Otherwise, use a bus
or taxi to get home or back to
the office.
Employers can do much to
ensure that company func-
tions are enjoyable/ without
risking the lives of employees
driving home, or other inno-
cent people.
