OFA debates economic
resolutions
In the - Wednesday after-
noon session of the OFA
convention in Toronto high-
lights included debate on
several resolutions concern-
ing the economic situation
facing farmers today. Reso-
lutions to pressure the Ontar-
io government to produce
programs to assist farmers
through the present financial
crisis and long term programs
to promote agriculture in
Ontario and for OFA to
peitition the Ontario govern-
ment to provide meaningful
capital grant programs to
give Ontario farmers parity
with other Canadian farmers
were enthusiastically carried
by the 500 delegates.
A Huron County resolution
that OFA study Saskatche-
wans Land Bank programs as
a means of keeping control of
agricultural land by Cana-
dians and getting young
farmers started was passed.
A report was presented by
Cooperators Insurance on the
good increase in enrolment in
the farm family life insurance
program and the extended
medical insurance coverage.
It also included a description
of new workshops to train
autobody mechanics in plast-
ic repair. and their invest-
ment' in Co-Enerco, a new
cooperative resource com-
pany.
The report from the OFA
Membership Committee ad-
vised delegates that mem-
bership in the OFA was up 6.5
per cent in 1981 and is now up
to 25,802 Individual Service
Members, with Huron Coun-
ty having the largest county
membership. up to 2,139.
The recommendation that
no distinction be made bet-
ween full and part time
farmers in OFA' membership
and services provided by
OFA created much discussion
by the delegates. It was
finally passed after it was
pointed out that due to
current low commodity prices
and high interest rates, many
farmers who had been or
would be full time farmers
were forced to depend on
some outside income in the
family and should not be
discriminated against.
There was also consider-
able debate on a motion that
OFA organize a protest to
Queen's Park if the Ontario
government doesn't take
immediate action on the rec-
ommendations of the Emer-
gency Task Force. The Huron
County delegates unani-
mously supported this motion
but it lost by a very close vote.
BY MURRAY ELSTON,
SUNCOR
Debate on the Suncor
matter has moved from the
floor- of the House of the
pages of the Globe and Mail.
A letter to the Globe from the
Minister of Energy evoked
response by way of letter
from both Opposition Leader
Stuart Smith and. House
Leader Robert Nixon. The
Energy Minister charged
that his position had been
Misrepresented, and indicat-
ed that he had no intention of
hurting the competitive pos-
*ton of Stical- . or of
disclosing information that
would jeopardize attempts to
find a buyer or buyers for a
further 26% of the com-
pany's shares.
In fact, there has been no
request for disclosure of
information that-is normally
seen as sensitive and secret
data.
A call has again been
made to have financial advis-
ers from the Government and
from McLeod, Young, Weir
and Price Waterhouse attend
and review the transaction
with Legislative Members.
ONTARIO AGRICULTURE
The Task Force report
prepared by a group of five
Federation of Agriculture
appointees, including Mur-
ray Gaunt from Wingham,
was presented to the Annual
Meeting of the Federation
this week.
The report demonstrated
that Ontario Agriculture is
operating at a disadvantage
when financial assistance
which Ontario farmers re-
ceive is compared to assist-
ance from other provinces.
Several recommendations
were made in the report, and
we are awaiting Government
response to the report. To
this point, requests for aid to-
farmers have been met with
a request for proof of need.
Tice report certainly meets
that request and goes further
to suggest ways to alleviate
the problem.
ISTRA TRUST
The matter of the Re-More
Astra Trust collapses has
risen again. This time
Grimsby , man who thought
he was investing $50,000 is
in dangeT of losing his. home.
The $30,000 whirl 4he man
thought was going to Astra
was channelled to Re-Mor,
and when he went to with-
draw the money he was told
he could not. Instead. Astra
loaned him 527.000, for
which the company is now
suing him. The Government
has been asked to look into
this matter.
VAUGHAN APPEAL
The famous Vaughan
Township land matter has
been raised in the Legisla-
ature and in Committee.
Apparently an executive dir-
ector in the Provincial Hous-
ing Ministry called the May-

holiday season.
During the holidays, furni-

accomodate the tree and
other Christme decor, dis-
rupting the ordinary house-
hold traffic patterns. Falls are
more likely. So, take care as
you nutve from room to room.

McwocliaL COLLECTION
The- matter of the dismis-
sal of 'Robert McMichael by
the Government„is one step
closer as Reuben..Baetz ist-
troduced his bill in the
Legislature. The Opposition

taken except in the most
serious situations. The Min-
