Seaforth Insurance Agency
Ltd. at 39 South. Main Street
was only amalganiated in
1974, but has tangled roots
which can be traced back to
the first agent to sell insur-
ance in this community- Wil-
liam N. Watson who had an
office at 12 North Main
Street, on the east side of the
street just north of where the
Queen's Hotel is now lOcated.
by February 1059.
The Donald G. Eaton Insur-
ance Agency and John A.
Cardno Insurance Agency
amalgamated late in 1974 to
form Seaforth Insurance.
which Ken Cardno and Don
Eaton now own. Ken's father.
John Cardno. took over the
Watson and Reid General
Insurance Agency in January
19S9. Merton A. Reidand Jim
Watson were the owners of
the latter company. and Jim
was the son of W.N. Watson.
originally an agent of the
Statacona Insurance Agency.
On the Eaton side of this
corporate ancestry; the Eaton
Agency took over an agency:
founded by Wilson Oke after
World War U, in 1962. and
expanded by taking over
another early area agency.
WE. Southgate Insurance, in
1965.
ken Cardno says one of the
biggest changes in the insur-
ance business as it applies to
small towns in the last fifty
years has been in the area of
subscription policies. From
the late 1920 s into the SOs
major projects might have
had many agencies insuring
them on a subscription basis.
This generally isn't the case
today because individual a-
gencies, such as Seaforth
Insurance, have better
backing and improved
methods of reinsuring the
policies they insure, so sub-
scription policies aren't as
necessary. Seaforth Insur-
ance now offers a complete
line of insurance; commer-
cial, home business, automo-
bile and -farm. among other
things.
When Seaforth Insurance
was established in 1974 it
settled in its present South
Main Street location within
the Cardno block. which itself
has a fascinating story dating
back to the early years of
Seaforth.
It was built by Alexander
Cardno. John A.'s grand-
father and Keri'S great-
father. who was born in
Fraserburgh in north Aber-
deen on the coast of Scotland
in November 1826.
The Card( family may
have been descendants of
survivors of the "invincible"
Spanish Armada which lost
many men and ships on
Scotland's-coast-to the violent
North Sea weather while
trying to escape the British
Navy in 158$. In any case.
Alexander married the form- •,
er Margaret Mitchell thorn
1837) and moved inland to
Ellon in Aberdeen where he
operated flour tilitigrist
01
The Cardnes emigrated to the
St. Marys area of Upper
Canada in the early 1850 s.
where he ran a flour _mill.
Later they moved to Seaforth
and had 13 children. nine of
whom lived. (five girls and
four boys.) one of whom was
John Mitchell Carthiol, John
A's father. who operated a
business exporting commodi-
des, like pork and amPles-
Anyway. Alexander began
building the Cardno- block, in
1$76. It was under construc-
tion when a Maier, fire le'vel-
