er when the snow comes if
you begin stocking it now. To
attract a good variety of birds
you should remember that in
nature birds have different
feeding habits ,and food pre,-
ferences4 You therefore have
to provide different types of
food in a number of different
ways.
Cardinals and Bluejays, for,
instance prefer sunflower
seeds on a platform while
Sparrows and Juncos are
content with oats and corn.
Woodpeckers, Nuthatches
and Chickadees like suet or

of your back porch.
Another way of attracting
this latter group of birds, who
distinguish themselves by
being able to cling, to vertical
tree limbs, is to mix oats. corn
and other fine birdseed with
peanut butter. You can then
push the resulting thick paste
into one inch diameter holes
you have drilled into a piece
of unsplit firewood. This type
of birdfeeder has more of a
natural appearance to it when
you hang it from a tree limb.

beneath the holes of your
feeder the Sparrows and
Juncos will be able to use it as
well.
It is important to keep your
blidfeeder stocked. Birds will
become dependent on your
tbod and if the supply is not
maintained, will suffer need-
lessly. It is also important to
maintain the supply well-into
the spring because this is a
time when natural food sup-
" plies. are not abundant.
It is a truly beautiful
while Brussels only had 10
