County Board of 'Education want to be its
chairman.
Trustees Dorothy Wallace and D.P. Morin
announced their intention to seek election at
the November sesion of the board. Elections
will be held in. December.
Trustee Merin. representing Howick and
Turnberry townships and Wingham, has
been on the board four years and now is
vice-chairman.. He has served on Manage-

Grey "township ceuneil accepted the
tender of Ryan's Bulldozing when it met h•1
regular council session on November 2.
The tender was for the use of a grader at
526.50 per hour with $17 standby. Mc-
Gavin's Farm Equipment was hired to do the
back street in Walton with a 72 horsepower
tractor and blower at $18 an hour. Ken
Miller has been hired to drive truck and Jim
Hart had been hired to drive the township
grader. All of this has been approved by the
Ministry of Transportation and Communi-
cation.

"How are you gonna keep them down on
the farm?" This was question often asked
by farmers about their children in days gone
by. In the city, jobs were plentiful. there
was more money to be made and the work
and hours were a lot easier.
Today this trend has changed someWhot.
Formwork is more autometed, so it's less
back -breaking and.the statos farmers iii
' society has increased dramatically. Farm-
. iri•g seen'as a good healthy lifestyle for a
&entity, ft's a bUsiness and a 'challenging— .
occupation. /
Many young people are interested in
farming today and they are staying down on
the farm.
Now I'll pose a new question. "How are
you going to get them off the farm?" I Work
with lots of young people interested in
agriculture. They get the opportunity to go
on tours, take part in competitions. visit
The latest on
I receive many questions-
relating to Drainage Law. I
try to answer these to the best
of my ability using the various
resources I have at my
disposal. Of the many ques-
tions I have been asked, two
which-recur most often are • If
I drain my farm, what do I
have to do with m y outlet
water? Also, What can I do
about surface water running
onto my farm from my neigh-
bour?
The following quote from
Judge Clunis, former Provin-
cial Drainage Referee, should
answer both of these ques-
tions.
"Surface or percolating
water, that is, water not
flowing in a defined water-
course has no right of drain-
age. While a lower owner
cannot secure the assistance
other farms, and they frequently take post
secondary education.
But there are others who don t get the
opportunity to get off the home farm to see
other farming operations or to take ‘ourses

Guelph also offers' courses in basic
agriculture in , Brantford, Gtkelph and
Toronto in the fall and winter. -These

several weekS or for one day, Only:
They cover, business, livestock, took,
horticulture and spucial in re topics like
beekeeping, Vat cutting andt4bfahrting.
The coursesaie basically aimed at people
' with little or no farm background. You can
also do correspondence and home study
courses on similar topics.
Fartshawe College in Woodstock offers a
two year agricultural course. Many young
people live at home and commute. The
school year is shorter than for other college
courses so students can help at home in the
spring, summer and fall.
/ Another good' way for young people to
learn is by going on the Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food Soil and Crop
Management Tour or the Livestock Man-
agement Tour. These week long tours visit
numerous ..farms,' research and industry
facilities. They have excellent evening
discussions.
Locally, all of the groups who are
interested in the advancement of agricul-
cure such as the Agriculture and .Food
office. Soil and Crop Association, Holstein
Clubs, Cattlemen's. Milk Committees, Pork
Producers. Feed Companies, Veterinaries,
etc.. sponsor courses, information meetings
and tours. Take advantage of these.
You can find out how other farmers
operate by working on other farms or doing
eelief.,chores. There is e big demand few
people to take over when. fanners are away

' All of these ideas Involve effort and time
commitment. Most of them involve being
away from the lame farm a day, a week, a
month. Each idea has its merits-- but only
you can decide which one suits you. Just
remember, the pursuit of knowle,dge always
rays off.
