If_ your cow peaks at five pounds more than the last lactation. she should therefore give an estimated 1000 pounds more during the current lactation. If you are milking 35 cows. this would give an added production of 35,000 pounds during, the year. E.L. Rothmel, Assoe,AgAep. WARBLES BTrE THE DUST We're winning the war on warbles. The incidence of warble infestations in market cattle has deceased from thirty-three per cent to nine per cent in the last four years. Producers are treating be- cause it pays. Test have shown that treated cattle gain about 23 lbs. more over winter than untreated cattle. This gain is worth about S16 per head on today's market. The cost varies from 40 cents fora 400 lbs. calf to 80 cents pigs and the market price that is needed to make the cash flow balance. The mar- ket may not be high enough but you, at leant, know where len are. It's then poSsible to work on the variables that rye mentioned to make up mine Of the. difference. Alan Scott, Agricultural Rep. ESUMATING PEAK MILK According to the Univer- shy of Illinois, if you goal is a 19,000 pound herd average, you older cows will have to peak at about 80 pounds and grit calf heifers at about 60 pounds. For a 17,000 pound average, your older cows need to peak at 75 pounds and first lactation heifers at about 56 pounds. If your cider sows peak at 62 pounds and yOur heifers at 47. you can expect a herd average of around 13,000 pounds. A- nother guideline is to multi- ply peak milk yield by 200 to give yourself an estimate for the. lactation. If you have a cow peaking at 90 pounds, you should expect a potential of 18,000 pounds of milk. Peak milk production gen- erally occurs about four to six weeks after calving. Feeding plays an important part in "Sturdays in Guleph" is a new series of one-day courses for novice farmers held throughout the autumn at the University of Guelph. "When we held a Saturday course last year, we were amazed to find people com- ing from as far afield as Quebec and Thunder Bay," explains Nancy McPherson, course co-ordinator. After deducting 'dir- ect expenses, such as feed, we found that we had S54 from this extra pig to pay debt. That amounts to $4,000 on a 70 - 80 sow herd. An increase in one index point meant an extra $1.19 per hog that could be applied against debt repayment. Similarly, improving feed efficiency by 30 lbs. could mean a saving per market hog of almost S3. Most of these things don't happen over night but a start has to be made some place. it's_toogh if operating credit is -already tight. It's also difficult to get enthused about improving when mar- kets are poor. However, there really aren't too many other alternatives. A farm operation has a certain cash outflow. It has to be serviced by cash inflow. If it doesn't come from the farm, it has to come from outside sources or owner's equity. I think that the first step is pinpointing , the number of design, landscaping, wildlife sanctuaries and fish culture: Fish Farming on Saturday, November 14 will be held on a fish farm near Guelph. Top- ics include nutrition, rearing, management, disease and regulations. Enrolment lim- ited.
