It's a vVarni summer day-
and we find Exceptional Ed
Cruising into the town of .
Clinton with die Wind taking
free reign by runningt over
the rep' cif Ed's head. He's
traveling south after leaving
131yth and arrives in Clinton
admiring the leisurely ar•-
mosphere of the town when
he decides it's time for a
beverage break.
Ed - (Full of indecisivness )
Where should I head to find a
good cup of coffee? Oh, Oh,
there is a likely looking
prospect.
Driving down Vinegar Hill
in Clinton. Ed spots a large
looking -building to his left
and quickly swerves his
excuse for an automobile into
the parking lot in the rear.
Ed heads for the front door
and almost makes it into the
building in a dignified man-
ner. but becomes so engros-
sed in looking at his reflect-
ion in the glass door. that be
misses the, handle and bangs
fate the door

through a filing cabinet and
goes to speak to her.
Ed - Excuse me Miss, where
could I find a good cup of
coffee? I'm just visiting
Clinton. and thought I would
like to stop -for, a' cup of
coffee , yon know, hut it
seems to be difficult to find-

Student Services. what is a

Education? (To himself.) I'd°
know what Huron County is,
Mrs. Clarke - First of all. a
Board of Education is a
group of people who are
responsible for the edireation
system in an area. They
operate under the Education
Act, legislated by the provin-
cial government.
Ed - Humph. well okay then.
what is Student Services?
Mrs. Clarke - Student Ser.
vices involves personnel
trained in various areas of
special education who are
available to Huron County
schools. for program devel-
opment and consultation
dealing with exceptional
children.
Mrs. Clarke - (Srailing) No,
sometimes an exceptional
child- is taken from the
dassroOm and rgceivvs extra
help in his/her particular

'16 special learning needs
classes in the county. They
are ,self-contained' classes
within regular school „build-

more attention.
Ed - How small are they?
Mrs. Clarke - Special learn-
ing needs classes are divided
into two levels. The primary-
junior level usually has enrol-
ment up to nine students and
the intermediate-senior level
usually has enrolment up to
12 students,
Ed - Ail right, now let's go
back to thebeginning. What
does Student Services do?
Mrs, Clarke - Under Student
Services there are several
kinds of teachers, Six of tour

Ed - What else is there?
Mrs. Clarke - There are five
teachers called Area Re-
source Teachers, Speech and
Language.
Ed - Why are those kind of
teachers needed, can't the
students Speak?
Mrs. Clarke - Speech and
language teachers assist wan
articulation and speech diffi-
culties. There is also an
English as a Second Lang-
uage teacher and a Resource
teacher at the high school in
Clinton.
Ed - Huh, wait a minute,-
what dOes that mean in
language I can understand?'
Mrs. Clarke - We have
teachOts who are Specially

Services teachers test, and
diagnose the needs of the
students. ,

Mrs. Clarke - Wall. special
education is for children with
special needs.
Ed - Oh, just like me. I'm

Mrs. Clarke • True, but for
our purposes exceptional
children may range from the
child having difficulties in
learning to the gifted child.
Ed - What kind of education
do the exceptional children
get?
Mrs. Clarke - The needs of
the exceptional child may be
met In a, regular classroom
pihgram. Presently in Buren
County there is. Withdrawal
