He's traveling south after leaving 131yth and arrives in Clinton admiring the leisurely ar•- mosphere of the town when he decides it's time for a beverage break. Ed - (Full of indecisivness ) Where should I head to find a good cup of coffee? Oh, Oh, there is a likely looking prospect. Driving down Vinegar Hill in Clinton. Ed spots a large looking -building to his left and quickly swerves his excuse for an automobile into the parking lot in the rear. Ed heads for the front door and almost makes it into the building in a dignified man- ner. but becomes so engros- sed in looking at his reflect- ion in the glass door. that be misses the, handle and bangs fate the door - Phew. l just met ms-sell. I beg your pardon. what is Student Services. what is a oa-ordinator and last but nut least what is a Board of Education? (To himself.) I'd° know what Huron County is, Mrs. Clarke - First of all. a Board of Education is a group of people who are responsible for the edireation system in an area. They operate under the Education Act, legislated by the provin- cial government. Ed - Humph. well okay then. what is Student Services? Mrs. Clarke - Student Ser. vices involves personnel trained in various areas of special education who are available to Huron County schools. for program devel- opment and consultation dealing with exceptional children. Mrs. Clarke - (Srailing) No, sometimes an exceptional child- is taken from the dassroOm and rgceivvs extra help in his/her particular area Of c9,11,CSA2 Ed • 'Xikay, what 'else is therethere Mrs. ? - there are also '16 special learning needs classes in the county. They are ,self-contained' classes within regular school „build- .nigs,:And are usually small, prinfiding the student with more attention. Ed - How small are they? Mrs. Clarke - Special learn- ing needs classes are divided into two levels. The primary- junior level usually has enrol- ment up to nine students and the intermediate-senior level usually has enrolment up to 12 students, Ed - Ail right, now let's go back to thebeginning. What does Student Services do? Mrs, Clarke - Under Student Services there are several kinds of teachers, Six of tour 'teachers are called Area ReegarCC.leaChers. FainiP8. ExceptioualitieS. Each one Works, with five schools and is tes'ponsiyle for diagnosing and helping to dpvelop pro- Ipinis for exceptional- stu- dents. Ed - What else is there? Mrs. Clarke - There are five teachers called Area Re- source Teachers, Speech and Language. Ed - Why are those kind of teachers needed, can't the students Speak? Mrs. Clarke - Speech and language teachers assist wan articulation and speech diffi- culties. There is also an English as a Second Lang- uage teacher and a Resource teacher at the high school in Clinton. Ed - Huh, wait a minute,- what dOes that mean in language I can understand?' Mrs. Clarke - We have teachOts who are Specially Vainedin'special editcation, Ed --DO these "teachers rag teach in a alassrOom, with a blaekboard and erasers? , Mrs, Clarke • :The Student. Services teachers test, and diagnose the needs of the students. , • - What kinds of needs? Mrs. Clarke - Wall. special education is for children with special needs. Ed - Oh, just like me. I'm Exceptional E&' am debon- air, handsome and a real thrill to be with. Mrs. Clarke • True, but for our purposes exceptional children may range from the child having difficulties in learning to the gifted child. Ed - What kind of education do the exceptional children get? Mrs. Clarke - The needs of the exceptional child may be met In a, regular classroom pihgram. Presently in Buren County there is.
