, OUR GREAT OUTDOORS
Drive through the
countryside this time of year
and you'll see many of the
ways in which people enjoy
the outdoors.
Up near Bayfield. along the
Bayfield river. you'll see
fisherinen trying to. catch
rainbow trout as they make
their fall run. A little further
south in Hay Swamp 'shotgun
- toting hunters will be trying
to, find the elusive ruffled
'grouse or maybe a few early
ducks in the Ausable River.
Bow hunters will be stalking
deer along the Black Creek.
Over towards Grand Bend, if:
Conservation -Authority own..
ed woodlots, trappers will be
checking for raccoon , anc
muskrat sign, and making!
mental notes m of locations
where they will.later put their
sets.
Down the - Lake Huron
shoreline in Pinery Provincial
Park a group of birders (that's
what birdwatchers now call
themselvesl'will be intent on
adding early winter migrants
-16 their "life list" of bird
species. A mile or so south a
couple of fishermen. ,heivily
clothed to ward off the cold
wind, will be gtying it Onelast
try as they troll "The Cut" for
walleye. Cottagers at , Port
Franks will be putting in a'few
cords of wood to ward off the
cold of the approaching win-
ter.
Inland a few rkdes at
Parkhill Conservation 'Area a
small• group stopped at die
lookout will be counting the
Canada Geese visible across
the Reservoir at the water's
edge. On the nature trails at •
the hack of-the.Conservation
Area a couple of amateur
nature photographers wijI be
attempting to record the stark
.beauty of the late autumn,
landscape.
Nearby along the Ausable
Gorge a bunch of hikers win
be trying to find the next
white flash marking the Aus-
i able Trail. At Rock Glen
'persistent Fossil hunters will
be searching the gravel beds
for Brachipods and Trilobites
deposited there b‘ recent
high water.
Many of these people pro-
bably have something in
common with me. To one
extent or another they enjoy
the outdoors. This column is
for people like ,that and
perhaps you count yourself
among the afflicted. If so I
invite you to join me each
week as I explore the differ-
ent ways we can' aquire that
healthy outdoors glow.

A $ THE HURQNHEXPOSITOilf NOVEIVIREE 4, 100
Dear Expo fans: !feel responsible. I know it
sounds silly and superstitious. but feel
somehow responsible fib the Expos' loss to
the Dodgers.
A baseball fan. I'm not. But. every year
about this time I get caught up in the World
Series fever, as many temporary fans do.
Last year was especially exciting with the
Montreal Eapos fighting-for the Nation-al-
League Eastern Division Championship right
down to the final week end of the season.
For most of the season, I paid mild
attention to the team's winning ways. but' on
that final weekend. I actually sat down to
watch the game.
What happeneg_They lost. All season.
wheal wasn't Watching, they won. When I
started to get interested, they lost. The old
superstitious bug started running around my
head.
This year I didn't have time to watch many
games, even if I had wanted to. But, it
seemed whenever I did sit doWn to watch a
game. the Expos lost. I saw the end of many
an Expo winning streak.
Strictly coincidence, 1 told myself.
Then along SallIcAllg..
Philadelphia. In spite of my better judge-
ment, 1 found myself drawn to the TV set.
I saw two gameS.-The Expos won one and-
lost one. My record seemed to be improving.
During the series with the Dodgers. 1
watched the third game while visiting with
friends. The Expos won. I watched the fourth
game by myself. The Expos lost.
When the fifth and final game came along.
I decided to play it safe. I turned the
television on. but I did not watch. Instead I
toiled through a pile of reading material that
had-been 'gathering-fora week.
But, I had one ear cocked to the living room
I could hear the fans' excitement 'mounting. 'I
was drawn to the set. just in time to sec the
Dodgers' winning home run. I felt so guilty!
It is a feeling similarly to the one
experienced by a person who washes and ,
politheS his car before the big Weekend. He
starts on a bright sunshiny afternoon. when
there isn't a cloud in the sky. By the time he
finishes. rain is pelting down and it doesn't
stop until Sunday night. , ,
Football fans have no reason to worry about
me. The longest time I watched a game was
the day I decided to find out how long it would
take to "get to" my brother-in-law by asking
stupid questions. I think I lasted five minutes.
Hockey is another 'story... I've been a
Torolito,1),4agle Leaflan for .years...1 was a. fan.--
the last time hey won the cup, and stilt am.
although Lilo longer watch many 1 games,. I
still •feel superstitiously 'responsible. •
