(Photo by Campbell) No UNICEF boxes this year, for HPPCSS BY STEPHANIE LEVESQUE In a 8-4 vote, the Huron-Perth Separate- School Board moved to have the schools in its, system withdrew temporarily from the UNICEF program at Hallowe'en. The motion was approved by the board at its Sept. 28 meeting, following discussion amongst the trustees. A memorandum from director of educatien William Eckert will be sent to the principals of the Huron-Perth separate sPhools, notifying them of the position taken by the board. Mr.Eckert reminded trustees the issue was raised at the board's last meeting after direction was requested by the principals. The approval means the children in the 'system will not be carrying UNICEF boxes on Hallowe'en. The with- drawal is on a temporary basis fori this year. At• the ptevious meeting of-the-hOrd, it decided. it would wait until the Sept. 28 meeting before making a decision. It was anticipated that Bishop John Michael Sherlock Of the London_ diocese would, make an announcement regarding the UNICEF boxes but the announcement was not made. TrusteeJeannette Eybergen suggested the students 'could collect money for some aoission She said the children felt they were doing iiiMething when they collected the- , money in the UNICEF boxes. She added that people thought a lot more of the children who carried UNICEF boxes on Halkiiie'en. Trustee William Kinahan said he agreed with Trustee Eybergen and said maybe a choice could be offered to the students. Board chairman Ronald Murray said the board's purpose is to educate children, not to collect money on Hallowe'en. "Personally, I don't like to see our kids gping out with boxes," said chariman Murray. Trustee Ernest Vanderschot said the board should leave the question of the UNICEF boxes the way* is. (Previously the decision to allow the UNICEF boxes to be distributed among the school children was left up to the individual principal.) He said the board was not familiar with how bad the needs of the third world countries are. (UNICEF money aids in the third world.) "I will not vote for the motion," said Trustee Vanderschqt. Trustee John O'Leary said if it was left up to the principals would it be,mandatory for the children to take the UNICEF boxes. "Not now, not ever," said director of education Eckert. He said the decision had - been leftutr-ttr the individual- child:- WHEN YOU BRING IN YOUR OLD WINTER BOOTS, YOUR OLD SLIPPERS ARE WORTH ,$ • 00 OFF A NEW WARM COSY PAIR THURS., OCT. 15 TO SAT., OCT. 24 TRADE-IN SALE TRADE IN YOUR OLD WORK BOOTS AND GET 1 0 00 OFF ANEW PAIR IT'S NEW ITS' EXCITING IT SAVES YOU MONEY -"awaram.--1 YOUR OLD MODEL RUNNERS ARE WORTH scf.po ‘IF'' WHEN • YOU PURCHASE A NEW PAIR NORTH STAR OR KEDS NORTH STAR PILLOW LINED BOOTS $ 12 OFF BRING IN YOUR OLD MODEL.
