examPte- we wander through the
baking section licking our lips over the
dream pies With their 'flaky crusts and the
butter tarts just oozing with raisins and
syrups and the muffins so light they almost
float off the plates.
Then we discover a chocolate cake that
'seems too good to be, true. It seems to
stand almost a foot high and it's covered
perfectly with cream frosting.
And we remember the chocolate cake we
baked for the birthday of somebody
special. For some reason. the layers did not
rise as high as our expectations. To
compensate for, the uneven top layer, we
tried to spread on extra icing which wa stoo
thin and kept running over the edge until
the cake was anchored in gucky frosting.
We look at the blue ribbon cake at the
fair; we picture our cake at home; and we

Then we decide it's time to move on to
the sewing section.

matching runners • one embroidered,
painted and each with a crocheted edge;

Several special
events on Sunday
This Sunday, October 4.
1981, many Anglican emigre-
J3ations throughout Canada,
will be observing several
events, all of which happen to
Tall on this particular Sunday.
The first observance is the
Celebration of the Festival of
Harvest Thanksgiving, •It is a
time when Christians gather
in the churches to offer a
special thanks to Almight
God. for the bountiful harvest
that we enjoy. Many people
think of the special day of
Thanksgiving, as originating
in the Plymouth Colony in the
•',Vnited States, when in 1621.
the Governor proclaimed a
special day for prayers and
for thanksgiving.
In the church of England,
however, the festival is very
ancient' nd goes back at least
to the time of Alfred the Great
(849 A.D.) It was called
Lammas Day, and was cele-
brated on the first day of
August. It was customary to
prepare the bread for the
Mass, by using the first ripe
corn of the season. The
bread was presented at the -
altar. and blessed in, the
Mass.
Today. Anglicans will fol-,
low'a similar custom. At. St.
Thomas', this Sunday The
Rev. Sylvia Brightwell. re-
cently ordained and an assist-
ant to the . Rev. ,Canon Ray
Farrell. at St. John the.
Evangelist Anglican Church,
London, will join with The
Rev. James Broadfoot and
the congregation: in this
Festival of Thanksgiving. The
congregation is fortunate to
have Sylvia share with them,
for she is a woman who has
many talents- especially in
the area of church music
The second observance on
this Sunday is World Wide
Communion Sunday. It is a
time when Christians from
different denominations will
gather together. to express
their unity and common alle-
giatie to Jesus Christ:
through the Sacrament of
Holy Communion. This meal
of which Christians partake.

Started keilling five winters age. Its being
used now. It fits quite nicely in the doll
bu ggy .
Where did we go wrong? Oh well, we
have no, time to worry about that now.
We're at the produceidepartment.
This is puzzling. Why do the tomatoes on
display seem to be the same size as our
pumpkins at home?
Along the walls are. ceramic pots in
splendid macrame hangers. Healthy-
looking plants of all varieties spill over the
edges.
AT hoine, we have pots hanging in
almost every corner, and we have a good
reason for each location. One reason is to
bide the chipia the other side of the flower
pot; another purpose is to compensate for
the fact the macrame' holder will not hang
straight; the third reason is to keep' from
view the ivy vine on which all the leaves
died.
Where did we go wrong? Maybe it's
time we left the building and strolled down
to the ring beside the barn where the 4-H
member are parading their calves.
The calves ail look big, healthy and
well-kept, and they 'seem so well-behaved.
We, remember that our calves alWays
managed to plow through the only mud
puddles on the fairgrounds when we were
on our way to the ring.
We remember, too, the biggest feature
in 'our parade was our tug of war with the
cavles, which the cavles always Won.
