at the time of telegraplisng. Early in
the action 500 Boers attacked the British
rear guard. Tho Navel. Brigade met
this and suffered heavily. It is known

.A sad fatality occurred at the Manor
llouse Thursday, through the ignorance
of a couple of Outario lads as to the
effect of gas. They were found in their
room in the morning, one 'beyond all
wetly assistant*, the other unconscious.
Wesley S. Chittiok was the name of the
tinfortunate young man who 110W lies
00111 in death. His oompauion, who has
new .completely recovered, is H. Falcon-
er.
The two young men arrived in the
city on Wedneedity, registering from
131yde Out, They secured room 31, and
slept there that night. 'The gas was
allowed to burn all night. On Thursday
they did not return until evening, an
engaged the same room, retiriug about
12 °Nem*. It was about 5 ceolook Fri-
day niorniug the night -watchman of the
hotel became aware that gas was escap-
ing, and upon investigating discovered
that it was coming from room 31. He
listened at the door and, heard heavy
breathing from. within., With the ASSiSt-
ance of a boarder he managed to elirab
through the transom. The room was
filled with the deadly gas.
The young men slept in separate beds.
One of them, young Chittick, lay
quietly on his small. single bed opposite
the window; his companion was found.
on the floor, and was breathing heavily,.
D. Jamieson and Dr. Neilson were
summoned, and while awaiting- their
arrival evetythieg possible to bring
back life to the young •mon was done by
the hotel people. Young -Falconer soon
recovered consoiousness, but Chittick
could riot be resuscitated.
Falconer states that lie .does not re-
member the light being blown out. He
says he knows nothing about gas. The
deceased yoinig man was past twenty
years of age. Ile is the oldest son of
