A happy celebration of
Varna Church's 82nd anni-
versary was held Sunday
with guest preacher Mr.
George Cowan from Dung-
annon-Nile, a former teacher
and Superintendent of teach-
ers. • leading the worship
service. He told of his desire,
to become a minister when
he was a child and how he
had to postpone it for lack• of
money for university. When
he was at early retirement
age. the call came again, and
he became a lay preacher,
with many rewarding exper-
, iences. His sermon topic
was: "Renewing our Faith."
The choirs, under the leader-
ship of organist. Marjorie
Hayter and Joyce Dowson,
sang a medley of songs.
Brian Chessell on guitar
accompanied them, and
played in duet with Marjorie.
Pete Postill's rich voice was
heard in two solos. Lovely
flowers from local "gardeni

The Explorers and
Messenger Groups held their
first meetings for the year on
Monday afternoon With
excellent registrations for
both groups. Evelyn Elder is
the leader for the Messenger
Group and Linda Traquair.
Shirley McAllister were the
leaders for the Explorer
Group. The GroupS began
their season by getting to
know their motto, hymn and
prayer; they also enjoyed
games and crafts. The
Explorer groupis.for all girls
nine, ten and eleven years of
age and the Messenger
group is for all boys and girls
six, seven and eights years of
age. An invitation is
extended to all children of
„. this age grotip to attend and
the meetings are held every
second Monday following the
school hour.

of business were discussed

Norman and Walter Smith,
whO visited the museum last
fall, found a number of new
displays have a been added
since then. A-large display of
docks has been set up in
the main building. Some
homes and barns of early
settlers have been moved to
the site. More will be-added.
Development of the museum
will continue over the next
five years. You may remem-
ber Bob Carbert, who was
director of farm programs on
CKNX a number of years
ago. He has been in charge.

Varna 4-11 club are Sandra
Turner and Kate Keys. Four-
teen girls attended our grit
meeting, held at Sandra's
'home Sept. 14.

Presbyterian Church met on
82nd anniversary
held in Varna
Soperintendent of educa-
tion- W. D. Kenwell- of the
Huron County Board of Edu-
cation told its September
meeting opening 'day enrol-
ment was smaller than pro-
jected.
Mr. Kenwell told trustees
opening day enrolment in
Huron was 10,696 students.
The projected figure was
10,176, down 80 students.
At elementary seltddit.'
6,633 students showed up -
opening day. The board pro-
jected 6.721. At County se-
condary schools 4.001 stu-
dents showed up but the
board projected 3.992 would
register. At the schools for
the trainable mentally retard-
ed 62 students enrolled. The
board's projected figure was
63 students.
