Board of Ed approves policies
BY STEPHANIE LEVESQUE
Three policies involving a
staffing formula, instruction-
al hours and course offerings
in, secondary schools were
approved in principle by the
Huron County Board of Edu-
cation. At its September
meeting the board' approved
the policies in principle, to
allow a one-month period to
gain feedback from those
involved.
The elementary school
staffing formula will take into
consideratiqn such factors as
class size, administration
time, remedial withdrawal
programs. specialized " sub-
ject areas such as French and
music, library programs. kin-
dergarten programs and spe-
cial learning needs classes.
The purpose of the formula
is to stabalize the pupil-
teacher ratio, to 'distribute
staff equally among schools
and to staff the schools
according to board objec-
tives.
The formula will be used to
allocate staff to schools `and if
final approval is received will
be implemented in the 1982-
83 year.
In an attempt to provide
uniform school hours at the
elementary level in the
county the board in principle
approved setting a minimum
itittftetional day of five hours
and IS. minutes, and provid-
ing for winter dismissal 15
minutes earlier than normal
where it has been approved
by the dieettor of education.
The biiird !received a letter
from Jean Wiese of II.R. 3
Goderich at the inning of
this year about the s ening
of lunch periods by 0 min-
utes. Director of e ucation.
John Cochrane said policy
would spell out at least 40
minutes for lunch periods.
The last item to be approv'
ed in principle was the course;
offerings in secondary
schools in the county.
The policy states basic
course offerings for each
school will be considered to
be this school year's selection
and any, future additions or
deletions will require 'formal
Board approval.
R.B. Allan. superintendent
of education, told the board
the new policy will make the
secondary school progelims
more "visible" to trustees.
The board approved the
following novels for use in
elementary schools in Huron
County:
Call It Courage by
Armstrong Sperry; The Bor-
rowers by Mary Norton, Cop-
per Sunrise by Brian Buchan,
Sword of Egypt by Bert
Williams, Pie Dog In My Life
by Farley Mowat, A Pony for
the Winter bey Helen Kay.
Strange take Adventure by
Sharon Siamon, and Mystery
of the Secret Tunnel by Wees.
Dear Betty
Well he did it again. Some help you were! I got a card and yes, money for my
birthday. Every year, the same. I guess I shouldn't complain it beats being stuck
with something 'I hate.
Last week I couldn't afford to b'uy anything for myself so I want to go back to
Cordon's Ladies Wear in Festival Square, Stratford, to spend my birthday money
on a really good outfit.
That Ports skirt and blazer was really sharp and not too expensive when you
consider the wear I'll get out of it. t also saw a really nice blouse• that would match
perfectly.
Of course it won't be just that easy. I'll change my mind, as soon as I set loose
in that store.
I do need a winter jacketand they have really nice Utex wool jackets with
hoods, that are very reasonably priced. Or, I could go for a Mon di wool skirt and a
Parkhurst or spanner Sweater . for quality, value, and style its really a hard decision.
Then of course, I'm always complaining about not being able to get slacks
where the waist and bums are in the same places and proportions as mine. Mr.
Leonard slacktir always fit beautifully and Gordon's carry Mr. Leonard slacks ,
shirts and blouses.
Well, I've got supper to make ironing to do anti Another. World is about to
start. See you Sat.
