WE WON! — Sombath Pongsall, 11, (left) a student at the Dublin
Summer School, races back to his relay team at a playday which the
school had. Somibath's team won this race. His group leader, Denise
Albert, an assistant at the summer school for the last two years, runs
along beside him cheering him along. The summer school had its fourth
session this year. (Photo by Rimrter)
.BY JOANNE RIMMER •
School in the summer is unappealing to
most young children. but students who
attend sum mer school in Dublin don't find it
that way:
According to student -assistant -Denise.
Albert of St. Cohitithan.,"thq ioye itf You

admits, that they•tgally like their tdachers.
But best of all there'a no homework.,
The summer school. SpOnsore.d by the
Huron-Perth, Roman Catholic Separate
School Board, is for exceptional children
from both counties who could "benefit from
informal teaching in social and academic
skills" explains John McCauley, 'superin-
tendent of education for thelitiard. •
Each county has its, own three-week
session in either July or August.. This year.
approximately '6() children from Perth
attended the July 'session and 60 from
Huron came in August.
The school employs three teacherk, one
Principal and six assistants. The principal
this year was Celeste McCreight. Marianne
Hogan taught the.Kindergarten.grades 9.0e
and two, and her assistants were Denise
Lane and Julie Vanderschot. Phil. Antonio

were .Miss Albert and. Mary 10•400by. The

,the school are provided by the board. There
is no charge to the students. • •
Three buses stop at points around each
county to pick up the students. bublin was
chosen as the location because of it S. central
location to both counties.
The program began four years ago to aid
regular classroom learning with other
learning experiences. Mr. McCauley ex-
plained the school has four goals which it
has aimed for in the last four years.
One goal the teachers have is to develop'
language experience possibilities. There's

SELF-WORTH
TheachooLidso prometes'success and
self-wOrth by allowing the student to Work
at his or her. own pace and adeomplish ,
things.
The teachers and assistants aim for a
relaxed setting in which the students will
develop socially. At this school, social
progress, is as important as academic
progress.
The students. are evaluated by their,
regular teachers; and if he or she feels it
necessary, the board will get a recommend-
ation that this particular student attend
summer school. The regular teacher will
also send on evaluation sheet which will
give the summer teachers some background.
On the student. However, Miss Albert feels

Mr. McCauley is pleased :with the
progress the school has ritade,,ht the past
four. years. Attendance has increased,
comments are favourable from parent's and
the kids enjoy it. And most important. •the
