Actually the occurrence of fire or submersion is rare, especially when compared to the danger of the human collision which occurs in almott every acci- dent. Rather than trapping theoccupanta, seat-belts help them remain conscious and able to get out of the car quickly. Yoe cannot escape from a burning or sinking car if you are lying on the floor with a fractured skull. A. study of belted drivers who were killed in motor vehicle tecidents in Ontario between 1972 and 1975 found very few died in a car that burned or was submerged in water. During this four-year period, 175• belted drivers died in traffic accidents. Of these.. only three died in a burning or subtherged car. In 1973 and 1975, no belted drivers died as a result of fire or water! Most of the 175 died in high speed head-on and side collisiims: It is likely most of these accidents were so severe no one could have, survived. However, some of the drivers might have been saved if they had been using their shoulder belt as well as their lap belt. Have a safe and happy summer. considered a hedge.
