Tooth decay starts as a tiny defect in the enamel. 'As the time progresses, decay penetrates deeper into dentin and spreads there (see the enclosed pictures). At this point the patient may not be aware of it. or there may 'appear only occasional sensiti- vity to cold and sweet. The next stage usually is a short attack of toothache provoked by the above stimuli. This already is very serious warning that the life of the tooth is being threatened because the next stage, spontaneous unprovoked toothache, is the beginning of an end. Richly afterward, the pulp (also known by its popular name , as a nerve) dies, leaving Only two alternatives: extract-v. ion of the tooth or a, root-canal treatment. (Both alternatives will be explained in subsequent articles.) If a patient decides to ignore condition of his tooth, trouble lies, ahead. Sooner or later such 11 tooth causes an abscess characterized by swelling of the gum, excruciating-pain, Malaise and fevPr,-. To bring our short treatise to conclusion I have to stress importance of prevention and early treatment of tooth decay as the best means of avoiding many painful (and sometimes costly) dental problems. BY DR. CYRIL J. LACKO In spite of extensive research, the exact cause of tooth decay is yet to be found. We knovli that regular brushing, proper diet and application of fluoride dec.-eases the incidence of decay, though they do not eliminate it. Thus, we still depend on its treatment.
